Richard Shapiro, the former head of the California Horse Racing Board, was charged with one felony count of vandalism for allegedly damaging a vehicle owned by a longtime rival, the Los Angeles County district attorney said.

Shapiro was charged with a felony because the financial damage done to horse racing advocate Jerry Jamgotchian's 2008 Jaguar was in excess of $6,700, district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons told The Times. Shapiro was not immediately available for comment and Jamgotchian declined to comment.

Wow! Heard a few weeks ago that he/they were trying to make this go away through financial means. I thought it had happened since it's been so long without word.

I guess the DA or Jamgotchian held their ground.

What goes around comes around!

This man never should have been in charge of anything.

Glad he's out of the game and hope he get help for his "condition".

Both held their ground. Especially Jamgotchian. Shapiro walked right into his wheelhouse with this one and although getting your car keyed is messed up, I have a feeling Jamgotchian would say "its a small price to pay to see this guy get his"!

Wow, 6,700 dollars (or more) to fix a key mark? Must be more to this story.

Sounds about right for a 2008 Jaguar repainted in a So. Cal. body shop. :faint:

It's an very expensive JAG! Just ask Shapiro! The most expensive paint job ever when you add in the felony and the hit to what's left of his reputation!

Any vandalism over $400 is a misd. or felony at the judge's wishes.

I'll bet Jerry Jam would rather have Cali go back to dirt tracks than have any judgement against Shapiro.

If he can go to jail in a hurry, perhaps he can be part of Arnie's "prisoner release" program.

Oh, wait. You probably have to be an illegal to be released.

I beleive Shapiro also lost a ton of $$ with Madoff.
If he goes to jail I would put him on a suicide watch.

"It is now absolutely incumbent, pursuant to CHRB rules, that the CHRB hold a hearing to consider further fines, penalties and/or suspension of Mr. Shapiro's license as well as the exclusion of Shapiro from all California racing enclosures for up to three years," Jamgotchian said in an e-mail after the hearing.

Some of the newer cars with self healing paint can very expensive to repaint especially if the scratches go through the various coats to the metal. If he keyed all the way around then it could be very costly.
