Employees of the Michigan racing commissioner's office received the following memo from the boss at the end of yesterday's workday (boldface is mine):
I have been appointed to a position in the US Department of Agriculture within
President Obama's administration. Today I notified the Governor of my
resignation which is effective at the end of this week. I start in my new
position on Monday, July 6.
Horse racing is an interesting industry. I think I've said that almost every
day that I have been commissioner. It is an industry in a state of flux and it
will continue to change until it reaches a point of sustainability. Hopefully
that will be in the near future.
You have a hard job as regulators and all of you work very hard to do the best
you can. I have enjoyed working with all of you and I have greatly appreciated
the work that you do.
Best wishes to all of you.
