While I don't spend much time listening to traditional radio there was once some good ones. Growing up we had WXRT & WFMT in Chicago.

I guess good radio as we knew it, is dead.

Darn shame. Lot of talent out there that deserves more exposure than these corporate stations choose to play.

melman, I found through an internet search, a live360 station that is a redux of KPPC. I listened for about two hours last night and heard a few songs that I've not listened to in a while. Live360 really cranks the volume on the commercials.

There is a site called Pandora which will allow you to structure your own radio station. You specify type of music or give it a "seed" of a particular song or artist and it will feed you similar selections. You have the capability to give a thumbs up or thumbs down to selections and the service learns from your decisions and fine tunes the offerings.

Capability exists to structure multiple stations and mix stations. For instance, I like Blues, Big Band, Dixieland, Brass Jazz, and 50s-60s Rock & Roll. Sometimes I want all of one kind, sometimes I want a mixture of all my stations.

Information about the artists, album, etc are available as the selection plays.

No commercials. Check it out.

Warren--Thanks for the heads up, that is also a very nice place to visit on the net. I'm a big fan of classical music a type that has gone out of style. It did make a "mini-comeback" about 25 years ago with Ravel's "Bolero" during which Bo Derek "got it on" while that music was playing. That is available on the net via YouTube-- Bolero-Bo Derek.

Yes, thanks Warren. I've been able to create a Flamenco station already. I'll probably create a few more. Any hints or suggestions about exploiting Pandora further?

I am a big-time Old Time Radio and TV and have thousands of old radio and TV programs. My favorites are the Brooklyn Dodgers and early Mets games. I'd suggest the following links for anyone interested in that sort of stuff...

I've set-up an AM broadcast station in my house so I can listen to my 40's programs on 1940's radios and I feed a modern DVD player to a 1966 Admiral color set and a 1955 RCA B&W so I can watch old TV.

Not that I have much time now that I'm betting horses 7 days a week.

If you wanted good music,ie,adult standards in 1960's LA you listend to KMPC or perhaps KPOL.For R & B or Do Wop there was Huggy Boy (Dick Hugg) or Art Laboe.

KMPC did not go talk until much later. For decades it was one of the most prestigeous stations in the nation. There was a DJ lineup that included Dick Whittinghill,Ira Cook,Gary Owens, and Johnny Grant,to name just a few. They did Angel baseball, first PCL and then major league, and Ram football and had sports commentators such as Bob Kelley and later Jim Healy.Great station, one that is remembered fondly by old time SoCal radio fans.

Some of those names are familiar such as Whittinghill and Owens along with Healy. Did Gary Owens do "Laugh In"?

DJ, RE: Pandora. To 'teach' it your preferences rate each rather than skipping and it will learn to play those more to your liking.

In TO we had CHUM 1050 largely and then a revolutionary CHUM FM which has morphed completely to the middle over the decades. We could also get WBZ, NYC and Wheeling West Virginia  at nights !

I confess that I would never have been a cheerleader for Sirius, but got it for 3 months with my new Accord gratis. When it came time for renewal at $7 per month, jumped in with both feet.

I love it and ANY music your heart desires is available. Most of the time, I never get beyond the 40s, 50s,60s, 70s & 80s. Never even get to All Sports, Talk, etc.

WV was WWVA -1170 a staple up and down the East Coast.

I could get CHUM occasionally in NY through local 1050 station WHN. I enjoyed listening to Windsor's CKLW-800 for really good DJs and Top 40. We also had one of the country's best in our market growing up, WABC-770.
