I don't know what to think of this writer OR this article but I can't believe it appeared in a semi-major newspaper. I promise no Alabama jokes but I don't think this writer knows much about racing.

Well, the writer is not bashful about giving us his opinions...how about we give him ours.

I'm guessing he didn't have a winning ticket last Saturday.

In all fairness, the depth of the field was very weak, but I think the top four runners were as good as any of the recent fields.

What would you like us to do if we agree for the most part? His point appears to be the Kentucky derby was won by a gelded New York bred--are you shittin' me? Frankly, there was one worse--the year the derby was won by a claimer!

The year Sea Hero won was worse than Charasmatic IMO, he was awful!

Since 1990 (14yrs) these are the fastest times for the KY Derby

2001-Monarchos-1:59.97
1996-Grindstone-2:01.00
2000-Fusaichi Pegasus-2:01.12
2002-War Emblem-2:01.13
2003-Funny Cide-2:01.19
1995-Thunder Gulch-2:01.20
1990-Unbridled-2:02.00
1998-Real Quiet-2:02.20
1997-Silver Charm-2:02.40
1993-Sea Hero-2:02.60
1991-Strike The Gold-2:03.00-tie
1992-Lil E. Tee-2:03.00-tie
1999-Charismatic-203.29
1994-Go For Gin-203.60-(sloppy track)

Looks to me as if Funny Cide was a legitimate Derby Horse, if for no other reasons than final time.

Raw final times mean ZIPPO! re: Najran!

Zippo?? Nah, I would think they mean something in this case. I would think, (unless the track maintenance crew is radically different year in and year out), that the track is prepped in similar fashion every year for the Derby. So, in this case, I would contend that final time DOES mean something.

With Empire Maker out, and a small field next Saturday, I say it's a very good shot we'll be looking at a run for the Crown on June 7....

So, Monarchos was 11 lengths faster than Real Quiet? 12 faster than Silver Charm? I don't think so, he wasn't as good as those two, before or after the Derby.

Obviously there are bound to be outliers in the sample set....LOL

But you said final time means ZIPPO. I disagree...

cj

Okay, I exaggerated with Zippo, but they don't mean much because of those outliers.

In 2005 the 3 year old crop will be mired in controversy as we will be reminded that the winner came from the crop of horses which lost so many due to the Reproductive Syndrome last year.

I don't know the numbers of the current foal crop. In years past it has been at somewhere between 40,000 and 50,000. You can't tell me that the foal crop in 1919, when Sir Barton won the Triple Crown, was that large. I have never heard a case against his worthiness.

The Derby winner is the Derby winner. Due to injuries and accidents and bad trainers, I wonder if the Derby winner ever is the BEST 3yo in the country. The point is that we will never know. Congrats to Funny Cide, the diligent NY Breeder's Association and those gelded throughout America.

This Bud's for you.

you said it right padnah. The Ky Derby and Triple Crown is a once a year event that brings life into the sport we all love. Heck, without it and none of this would be possible. Times change, breeding changes, communication change (internet). It's like arguing who was the best fighter, Ali or Marciano. My hats off and full of congratulations to the new champion. Thanks to all of the connections for your blood, sweat, tears and investment. This sport is the small part of my life that I really get to enjoy and when I can't do that anymore, I will find something else. I've been saying that for 35 years now.

I guess there just wasn't any quality Alabama bred horses to beat that cheap NY bred. Howard Cosell used to refer to sportswriters as "those 10,000 dollar a year hacks." While that may be harsh, it would be nice if some of them did some research before blasting an entire sport.

Funny Cide was gelded because he was born a ridgling, not because of poor breeding and the inability to run in a straight line.
He was actually conceived in Versailles, Ky. Belles Good Cide was shipped to NY and had the Derby winner there.

As far as Coach Price goes, I think bad decision making had alot more to do with his fall than bad company. Some think Jesus Christ kept bad company.

As far as comparing Price to this years derby crop, at least horses don't have to pay for it.

Why would a reported bother checking out facts? That would only kill any chances of ever working for CNN?

As foar as Coach Price goes, they are going to retire his number as a final tribute to him - never a gain will "69" be issued.
