"Don't think it couldn't happen."Churchill Downs Inc. spokesman Kevin Flanery said the threat is real.

"One of the things that we need to be worried about is that one of the states that have racinos looks at the first Saturday in May (the traditional Derby day) and creates a race with a $5 million purse (http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20090625/BUSINESS/906250337/1002/rss07#)," he said. "What will that do to the Kentucky Derby?" The Derby's purse is $2 million.

If there were no Derby, we might see a lot more 4 year olds racing.

A lot more quality 4 yr olds. Too many really good horses get put to stud just after the TC then BC races. More money to be made in breeding. rbj
