What i would like to know is where were these people and what were they doing that they couldn't go to Belmont anyway and enjoy a fine day of horse racing?

There would have been 50,000 extra 'fans' if Rachel had been running in this race. Are there that many people out there who are borderline 'fans' who could 'take it or leave it' if one horse is not running?

If i lived near Belmont, Rachel's participation wouldn't sway me one way or another. I wouldn't NOT go because she's staying home. In fact, i would prefer her to stay home because the place would be less crowded.

So, those 50k extra people are all going CONTINGENT on there being 50k more people...its really a fascinating thing. I don't know about you, but when i go to a racetrack, i want there to be as few people as possible. I love going to the track during the weekdays when no one is there. But, that's just me maybe.

Well I was in Belmont yesterday and the only time the grandstand and trackside were over half-full was when the Belmont Stakes itself was on. All other races, people were elsewhere it seems, not watching the horses.

There is absoultely NO CHANCE Rachel would have brought in another 50,000.

10,000 more TOPS.

Only a Triple Crown potential brings in the "witness history" crowd. And even with that last year w/ Big Brown, the attendance was a very disappointing 99,000.

Looks like 2000-2005 were the glory years for Belmont Stakes attendence.

The only reason the Smarty Jones Belmont drew so much is because it included about 50,000 drunken Philadelphians who otherwise marred a great day.
Anything more than about 70,000 makes the plant and backyard area an uncomfortable mess.
