The value on Clown cars just went way up.........

Obama's new rules will transform US auto fleet

DETROIT (AP) - Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs. Carpenters will still haul materials around in pickup trucks, but they will cost more. Nearly everybody else will drive smaller cars, and more of them will run on electricity. The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama administration on Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet.
The new rules would bring new cars and trucks sold in the United States to an average of 35.5 miles per gallon, about 10 mpg more than today's standards. Passenger cars will be required to get 39 mpg, light trucks 30 mpg.
That means cars and trucks on American roads will have to become smaller, lighter and more efficient.

Eric Fedewa, vice president of global powertrain forecasting for the auto consulting firm CSM Worldwide in Northville, Mich., said the changes will make pickup trucks so much more expensive that they will be used almost exclusively for work.
And instead of a minivan or SUV, more parents will haul their families in much smaller vehicles with three rows of seats - something more like the Mazda 5 small van, he said. The Mazda 5 gets about 28 mpg on the highway.
"I think what you'll see is a lot more creativity in interior packaging," Fedewa said. "You'll get more rows of seats where you traditionally had cargo space."
Already on Tuesday, some drivers were skeptical. Dixie Bishop, who runs a plumbing business in San Antonio that uses vans, worries the new requirements will drive up her costs at a time when customers are cutting back on repairs.
"Are they going to take my horsepower down?" she asked. "I have to be able to carry old water heaters and toilets. It's not beneficial for me to haul one water heater at a time. We need the power to pull these heavy items."
The changes will start with smaller cars and trucks, and improvements to the internal combustion engine, Fedewa said. Automakers also already working on new technology, including direct fuel injection and high compression of the air-fuel mixture, that will make cars and trucks more efficient.
Car companies are rewiring vehicles so components such as air conditioners and power steering pumps are powered by electricity rather than by the engine, saving fuel.

And they're developing computer-controlled transmissions with six or more gears, adding efficiency, and rolling out more gas-electric hybrids - among the few cars sold today that meet the 2016 standards.
Of course, developing the technology will cost money - billions of dollars - and automakers will pass that on to their customers.

isn't this a way for us to become less reliant on oil?

Several thing should be done.

INCREASE rail availability to all urban areas on PASSENGER dedicated lines (not sharing with freight).

Segregate big trucks from cars: do not allow them to mix at all on different roads altogether.

All the oil we need is right here in the US. It can be acquired and refined in an enviromentally safe way and additionally would provide new jobs.

In four months this pres. has nationalized banks, bought auto companies, financially wrecked the future of our children, split the Notre Dame community down the middle and decided what type of cars we will drive in the future.

Way to go B. Hussein Obama.

BTW- where's the birth certificate ??

Prove it along with the other FAUX mantras we hear all the time

All the oil is HERE so they keep importing it from around the world and BEG to pay more for it? Really good logic

Better than your ridiculous rail road post a couple back.
And far better than your totally un-thought out idea about segregating trucks and car! Really grade school level solutions!

Putt Putt Obamamobiles will without a doubt kill people. Will it be YOUR son or daughter, your wife, YOU?

This is the most irresponsible thing this paradigm of of poop has come up with yet.

Force = mass x acceleration. Keep all automobiles the same size, make them go a reasonable speed and they won't kill anyone.

Move freight onto one surface, people on another, or better yet,the same way the rational people of Europe do it effectively with TRAINS.

I have a huge lab, a good sized Australian Cattle dog and a Terrier. On "take your kids to the vet day", I need a vehicle with room not some tiny circus mobile. ....and putting dogs in the back of an open pick up is totally a not gonna happen situation [one of the things i really hate to see by the way].

1. Yes, don't make these little putt putts and we will be just fine.

2. We do not have alternate roads - you have to have trucks and cars on the same roads.

3. This ain't Europe - trains will NEVER be a viable alternative here. We are too spread out Trains will have limited utility. A rational person would know that. The CAR is a foundation of our FREEDOM to move about this great land. There NO GOOD reason not to have them NONE.

4. Worry about Canada, we do not need your stupid ideas down here. You left - good. Stay the hell out. Build your little railroads up there and let us know how it works out. Separate your trucks and cars and get back to us.

One problem with passenger rail is that once the people get to their destination, they'll be dependent on ground transportaion - i.e. must rent a car or rely on friends/relatives. One thing to rent a car for a cross country flight on vacation or business. But for a rail trip within one's state, under 100 miles, would be better off just to rent the car. This excluses with-metro transit to large cities with mass transit - like Chicago, which already has city and regional trains and buses - esp. within the city. But from Chicago to Peoria, rail wont' be practical. Sad but seems inevritable. Existing buses services would be practical from Chicago to Peoria, but how many people are willing to go by bus over 100 miles? Not all that many, sadly. Sometimes with good reason.

I am going out tomorrow and buy two new vehicles. I NEED a nice smooth riding, full size Cadillac to haul my butt around in comfort. I also NEED a nice 4WD JEEP so that I can manuver around on the land that I own until the government confiscates it. I figure if I buy both vehicles now, they will last as long as I care.

Good luck to those of you who are too young to make it out with only one more set of vehicles.

I've been driving a small truck that gets 30 mpg for almost a decade now. I always knew I was from the future, didn't realize my truck was.

Better scoop up those 400+HP Camaros and 500+HP Corvettes while we can....

Seriously, does that mean an end to these kinds of performance vehicles, or will they simply incur some sort of MPG Luxury tax?

I drive a small car because it is cheap. Obama makes me want to go out and buy the biggest gas-guzzler I can find. I don't like being told what to drive, what to eat, what to recycle, where to set my thermostat, etc.
