...my favorite Derby ride.

Jerry Bailey on Grindstone in 1996. It is the very best ride I have ever witnessed. I'm not a Jerry Bailey fanatic and I rarely get to bet him due to the price but he was unbelievable. Fortunately ABC decided to pick an isolated shot on Bailey for the entire race. Bailey was checked 5 times as he was forced to move up on the rail until the end. Grindstone was a "push button" horse that day but the ride was a perfect example of the value of a good jockey.

Patient Pat sat chilly for 8 1/2 furlongs and then got in eleven monster cracks of the whip down the stretch. The part I won't forget is how excited he was after the race in the outrider interview.

"All in God's good time."

Bailey also rode the hair off Sea Hero.
