Hey all...

Ah, it's that time of year again. The roses, the Twin Spires, and another seemingly unbeatable favorite in the Derby. This seems all too familiar.

Bob Baffert seemed to have "the horse" in 2001. Big, nothing but muscle on him, and a huge 17 hands tall. Remember Point Given?

In my own personal opinion, 'Given and Empire Maker have a whole bunch of similarities. I'll go through the checklist on 'em...

POINT GIVEN

-Won a few stakes at two, but never made a huge splash.
-Simply annihilated all comers in his prep races @ Santa Anita.
-Won California's biggest Derby prep.
-Threw in a dud at an unfamiliar track.

EMPIRE MAKER

-Was Grade 2-placed at 2, but didn't win a stakes.
-Absolutely steamrolled all rivals in the Florida Derby.
-Threw in an effort a few people still have questions about at Aqueduct.
-Fourth is to be determined this Saturday.

Will Empire Maker win one jewel of the Triple Crown? More likely than not. Will he win all three? No comment. Remember, we were all saying that that would happen two years ago. Sleep on it.

At two:

Point Given won a Grade I (Hollywood Futurity), placed in two Grade Is (Champagne and Breeders Cup Juvenile) and won another graded stakes (Kentucky Cup Juvenile). He ran at least five times. By the way, this is not a "splash"?. He ended his two year old campaign as the second choice for the Derby. Somebody must have noticed.

Empire Maker ran twice with no graded wins or any appearances in Grades Is.

This is similar?

Next, I do not think that Empire Maker's Wood has "questions". He won without effort and recorded the highest Beyer at nine furlongs of any three-year old. If if it was questionable, that is not similar to Point Given since he had no prep races with questions. Your third point in each list compares a strong win in the Santa Anita Derby to a "questionable" Wood Memorial win. How are those similar points?

Point Given ran twice at three before the Derby, Empire Maker has run three times. Many consider that a big difference.

I don't think their past performances or history are at all similar.

Did you not read the title of the thread? Keep in mind that this is the same guy who recommended Castle Gandolfo in last year's Derby! You raise a bunch of valid points I'd forgotten over the past few years. As a matter of fact, the only similarities I can see now are the odds and their running styles. However, I still don't like Empire Maker. Check my soon-to-be-posted analysis as to why. Later!

I picked Castle Gandolfo?

I bet War Emblem and wrote several posts weeks in advance as to why he was a live longshot and the pace would not be fast.

Also, I wrote weeks in advance that Saarland would be severely overbet.

That is all in the archives.

Maybe I did mention Castle as a longshot. I bet WE to win and used him in exactas with Medaglia D'Oro, Private Emblem and CG.

Anyway, those facts are irrelevant to my post. Regardless, they are not similar.
