OK, I admit it. I like TVG's "The Works" show. But fair warning. I watched all of those workout shows before the Breeder's Cup two years ago and it really messed me up. Good horses will really look good when they are running by themselves.
So, with that caveat aside, here are at least a few thoughts from some recent shows.
The most impressive workout I have seen for either the Derby or the Oaks was Santa Catarina for Bob Baffert. She was magnificently powerful. Appeared to me to be really handling the surface. Gary Stevens up.
Atlantic Ocean is probably considered a cut below the very best right now but her price and pedigree has any potential as she matures. She is also very big and long striding. With some improvement she could take it.
It is hard to watch Lady Tak workout because she is a very slightly built filly especially when compared to Santa Cat and Atlantic O. She, of course, has very quick action. The pace scenario is very important. When she got the clear lead at FG she was tough. It won't be that easy here.
Elloluv (sp?) will be the fav. I have the opportunity to join 75,000+ of my closest friends at the Oaks (the Derby for the Louisville locals) and I will be looking to beat her.
The Derby
I am rooting for Ten Most Wanted. Dollase got absolutely screwed by the rich Thoroughbred Corporation. Baffert picked up most of the accounts. This was a big chance for Wally to hit the big time with real talent and pedigree to work with. It must have been devastating to him to lose this owner. I never heard him speak an ill word after they parted ways. A bunch of good horses were yanked.
Ten's workouts look good,(59.54) but he is really weak in Pedigree. Can the horse make it this far?
I hate to say it because I have been critical of Cal horses going to the Derby without an East Coast prep, but Buddy Gil's work was absolutely fantastic. He has been at the track for awhile and he has taken to the surface. Stevens has been here for the works. He came out, without the stick, and ran from the 3/8th pole to the 1/8th pole (quarter mile) in 23 flat. Final 5 f time of 59.8.
Scrimshaw worked before they even turned on the lights (5 am or so) and was very unimpressive but he just ran. Who knows??
I'll bet against.
Eye of the Tiger--pretty bad work. Slow and not very fluid.
Can this be the year that the Cal horse wins? Can Buddy Gil run three big races in a row without regressing?
