View Full Version : fee to enter ky derby
what is the fee for an owner to enter the derby? if its a sizeable amount then a
50-1 shot has chance to win as any other. why would an owner invest if he didnt think has a chance of winning!

First of all there is a nomination fee.
This year there were 401 nominees.
If you do it early enough the fee is $ 600 and puts you towards all three triple crown races.
Past a certain date and that nomination fee is $ 6000.
Past the late nomination date, I think the fees go way up.
To actually enter each race there are additional fees (eg.$ 25,000.)

Entry fee of $25,000. Plus, a starting fee of an additional $25,000. Also, a minimum of $500.00 jockey fee for all jockeys that finish beyond third place.
If you care to supplement your horse, that'll cost a cool $200,000. You'd have to finish 3rd or better to recoup this expense.

Its pretty obvious that winning isn't the most important thing for some people. Money isn't an object (usually) to anyone who owns a 3 year old thoroughbred with serious talent.
Just be IN the Derby is a great experience, one that money can't buy.
