The 6 horse tri box has always been my Pops favorite bet on the derby. But he hasnt hit one since Go for Gin won. We seem to always have 2 of the 3. I know you guys that make a living at this find it funny that some show up just for this race. But it is exciting, offers great value on a possible longshot. When you have 20 horses, the best horse only has a good chance to win vs. a 10 horse field. I also feel that IWR, Dunkirk, FF, and POTN are the Best Horses. But there is no big money there. We all hope to add a couple of longshots and get Lucky.

This year i will do it again, pick yours too. lets see who can win this one.

1. West Side Bernie
2. Mr. Hot Stuff
3. Chocolate Candy
4. Fresian Fire
5. Dunkirk
6. Pioneer of the Nile

I dont think Summer Bird is far fetched at all...from a Beyer perspective, he looks great....improved 13 points from first to second start and 21 from second to third when he ran huge in the Arkansas Derby....the post could kill him unless he gets right over and gets a decent position---downside is even if he does fire, he will need to have a lot of holes open.....

3. Chocolate Candy
4. Fresian Fire
5. Dunkirk
6. Pioneer of the NileI'm thinking of a similar strategy, as of now - and always subject to revision - my 6 horse $1 TBX will include:

1) Pioneer Of The Nile
2) Desert Party
3) I Want Revenge
4) Papa Clem
5) Friesan Fire
6) Chocolate Candy.

I'm also thinking I might do a 5 horse $1 TBX instead, with:

1) Pioneer Of The Nile
2) Desert Party
3) I Want Revenge
4) Papa Clem
5) Friesan Fire.

Six horse box:

Bernie - Hold Me Back - Friesan Fire - Papa Clem - Choco Candy - Gen Quarters

1-5-6-7-11-12. Something in there would pay off nicely, I'm sure.

But since I don't usually plunk a buck twenty down on a box, more realistically I'll toss one and go with a 3 X 4 X 5 wheel: something like 5-6-7/5-6-7-11/1-5-6-7-11.

I have Advice "spotted" from a spot play I use that happened to also "spot" Invasar (if I'm spelling that horse correctly) a few years back. That's being said, I think I am compelled to say that my confidence in Advice is not very high. I might use him in a triple box if the track is off.

Really? How'd you come up with these? I'm genuinely interested.

Let me say up front, every handicapper has crazy methods which influence them in Derby choices. I admit mine are breeding and closing times. Especially final times (1/8ths). The things I don't like about my two choices are running styles (S O) and the prospect of rain and coming from behind in mud. But, then again, should there be mud, there will be many falling by the wayside and "puking the bit". These two will be eligible to pick up the pieces and a minor share(s) at fantastic odds.

Breeding: Advice's sire line is Buckpasser thru Buckaroo. Since 1980 there have been only 9 Derby starters with this bloodline. Meaning only 1 to three a decade. With O starters so far in this decade. That record is 9starters...3w-1p-1s. The three winners are names you may remember Silver Charm 1997 (24-12w-7p-2s) $6,944,369-- Lil E. Tee 1992 (13-7w-4p-1s) $1,437,506-- Spend A Buck 1985(15-10w-3p-2s) $4,220,689 Call me NUTS but it may be time for lightning to strike.

Breeding: Summer Bird's sire line is Raise A Native over Northern Dancer. The two most productive sire lines in the KY Derby. His sire is BirdStone thru Grindstone thru Unbridled thru Fappiano. All I can say is WOW! What a sire line. He can run all day. He's young and I think he started maturing in the ARk Derby. I do think he might be a factor in the Belmont should he stay healthy. His Dam's sire line is thru Summer Squall. More distance influence.

Final 1/8th's: Advice was 3.5 lengths behind at the 1/16th pole in the Lexington coming from last. His final 1/8th was approx 10.78 sec (quarter horse times) Once Gomez got him straightened up, he ran the final 1/16th like a bullet. Add the breeding aspect with the late maturing factor and old Bruddah likes. You must see the replay.

Final 1/8th's: Summer birds closing 1/8th in the Ark Derby was 11.79 sec. This plus his pedigree and late maturing aspects made him an include. Truthfully, I put him on the Win line out of a hunch. However, see the Ark Derby replay. A few more yards past the wire and everyone would be talking about this horse.

All of my making a case for my picks means absolutely nothing, unless they produce. Then after the race, I am either an Idiot or a Master of Handicapping. Good Luck with your choices and enjoy the race and our Sport.

I know its best not to change up how you bet but I really dont think you are going to have to box 6 for the winner. I think the winner is either IWR or FF with DP added as a more hoping chance. But underneath I think you can go pretty deep. Here is how I see it.
1st IWR, FF, DP
2nd Dunkirk, PC, RR, IWR, FF, DP
3rd GQ, HMB, SB, CC, MM, MHS, WSB, PC, RR, IWR, FF, DP
If I did box 6 they would be
IWR, FF, DP, Dunkirk, PC & RR
