I usually take a shot and buy the exacta. I'm on a freeroll for the next couple decades due to some of the past exactas. Do you think the favorites in this field are too strong to make this profitable? I'm doing it anyway, just wanted to get peoples input if you think all the top dogs will stay out of the top 2

My estimate would be that you are looking at a $330 gamble as the ex should pay $50 minmum- If you can afford to lose $330 - go for it !! Good luck !!

The downside (?) would be that if you hit a $600 exacta, you are looking at a signer and you've only doubled your money.

The exactas with Monarchos and Giacomo each paid well over $1000, I believe.

Not a good year to do it. I would say you can hit it and might get a good payoff by doing 6 horses over 12 horses for $66 a pop. Enter it and hit same ticket 5 times for $396 and you will be much better off hitting it 6 times and no IRS:)

Thanks for the input but I can't do that. I'd go too crazy if two 40 to 1 shots crossed the line 1-2

How do you plan on allocating the $380?

Playing an ALL/ALL exacta is how I took it.

Doesn't throwing away 189 losing tickets make you want to re-think your proposition? With some creativity, you could easily eliminate 1/2 of the field from winning, and identify 2 or 3 that will be clearly vying for dead last. This year, you have a real chance that favorites could finsh 1-2-3.

Well if I used this theory, i would have surely tossed out Giacamo in 05'.

I like to watch it with the hope that i could make a huge score.. I know its not likely, but its worth a shot

why the hell not............ it's once a year..........Go for it..........

I had nice wad on War Emblem but missed the exacta with what's his name and I think it paid 7k if memory serves me right...........I still kick myself

To answer your question. I think one of the favorites will win this year, and there is a good chance that it will be one of the top 5 in 2nd.

What he said though. It's once a year, and it sounds like this isn't a part of your normal handicapping. (at least I hope not!)

If that's what you do to enjoy the Derby, then bet it, and root like hell for the underdogs!

Normal exacta no. I think the favorites have a good shot to win and place.

Thread a few longshots into the top and you might get lucky. Otherwise, no.

Going back to 1998, the median exacta payoff has been 291.80 (average was 1310.62).

Minimum was 60, maximum was 9814.80. Last year with Big Brown over Eight Belles, the payoff was 141.60.

I don't know if I would buy the exacta this year. IMO there is a very good chance the exacta will come back much less that $380 for a buck. But hey it's once a year, give it a go and good luck to ya!!

Monarchos was $1229 for the deuce. I can't remember did we have that for $1 or for $2? :)

WHATS YOUR VIEWPOINT ON A TRI WHEEL ? AND WHATS IT COST

I think this is going to be a pretty chalky year...bad idea to wheel exotics. The winner is going to be I Want Revenge or Dunkirk, with a small sliver of a shot to Desert Party.

I love this strategy. I wish I had the balls to do it.

I'm guessing that this would have a *HUGE* long term ROI. Though the small sample is hard to validate.

An interesting note:

Avg of last three BRIS speed figure
Y RW RP RS R4 R5
2008 1 2 11 8 6
2007 1 3 4 11 15
2006 5 9 16 13 3
2005 12 10 8 11 18
2004 1 2 10 5 6
2003 2 1 4 5 10

A $2 exacta in 2006 (Barbaro over Bluegrass Cat) paid $587, in 2005 a $2 exacta (Giacomo and Closing Argument) paid $9,814.80 (signer?, too bad, I'll take it).

The most interesting point of this grid (though statistically suspect) is that there is only one top 3 ranked horse below the place pool. How many of us put those in the bottom slots?

I hope you went with your original play Zippy. You would have done great.

I know I've bet a lot of longshots over favorites in past years and won on them..Giacamo, Charasmatic, Funny Cide..and today it worked too. I didn't think the Bird stood a chance in hell of winning, I just simply put $5.00 on the longshots.

It actually wasn't any handicapping skill. I simply put $5.00 on all he longshots every year. For the most part it's paid off.
