Toetoe has discovered a heretofore disacquainted introduction to Manhattan (Richard and Lorenz), from Garrick Gaieties.

Herewith:

Summer journeys to Niagara
And to other places aggra-
Vate all our cares.
We'll save our fares.

I've a cozy little flat in
What is known as old Manhattan.
We'll settle down
Right here in town.

We'll have ... etc.

Even better are some "lost" verses:

We'll go to Greenwich,
Where modern men itch
To be free.
And Bowling Green you'll see
W-i-i-i-th me.

We'll bath at Brighton.
The fish you'll frighten
When you're in.
Your bathing suit so thin
Will make the shelfish grin
Fin to fin.

I'd like to take a
Sail on Jamaica
Bay with you,
And fair Canarsie's lakes
W-e-e-e'll view.

As black as onyx
We'll find the Bronix
Park Express.
Our Flatbush flat, I guess,
Will be a great success,
More or less.

A short vacation
On Inspiration
Point we'll spend,
And in the station house
We-e-e-e'll end.

N.B. Neither civic virtue nor the city's bustle will ever destroy the dreams of a girl and boy. As to the fate of boy and goil, that's well known.

Verse Umpteen:

You'll rule Bay Meadows
In red stilettos
Anodyne.
Our steed will take the Will-
Ia-a-am Kyne.

Usurious takeout will never mar
Our pastime peculi-AH-AR.
At San Mateo
We'll pass a day o'
Joy.

... I needed that. :) More:

We'll go to Coney
And eat boloney
On a roll.
In Central Park we'll stroll
Where our first kiss we stole,
Soul to soul.

Our future babies
We’ll take to “Abie’s
Irish Rose.”
I hope they’ll live to see it close.

The city's clamor can never spoil
The dreams of a boy and goil— :D
We'll turn Manhattan
Into an isle of joy.

This one, "A Twinkle in Your Eye," is from I Married an Angel (1938):

You can do any little thing that you've a mind to,
But you must do it with a twinkle in your eye.
You can be unreserved and even unrefined, too,
But don't forget that little twinkle in your eye.

My aunt Clarisse mistook the iceman for my uncle.
Because she smiled my uncle Freddy passed it by.
Now, you can get away with murder of that kind, too,
But you must do it with a twinkle in your eye.

You can do any little thing … [etc.]

You can break twenty hearts to get a new sensation,
But you must do it with a twinkle in your eye.
You may accompany a man on his vacation
If you return with just a twinkle in your eye.

You can do any little thing … [etc.]

My sister Sue once took a swim without a stitch on.
The cop who caught her took her to the jail nearby.
The judge who tried her held her for examination. ;)
Of course, it may have been the twinkle in her eye!

With Hart-felt gratitude,

f.r.

I’m game: so let’s, dude,
Plunk down on Pet’s Dude
At old Bill Kyne’s Bee-Em
(Quick! Carpe diem!).
And if we see ’im
Get DQ’d,
We’ll still have plenty jack ac-crued.

Reminds me of the opening lines to Tom Lehrer's revival/survival hymn, We Will All Go Together When We Go:

When you attend a funeral
It is sad to think that sooneral
Ater those you love will do the same for you.
And you may have thought it tragic
Not to mention other adjec
Tives to think of all the weeping they will do.

So, Kemo Sabi,
Who cops the Derby
In Ought-Nine ?
Maybe Advice at Nine-
Ty Nine ?

When Stephen Foster is played trackside,
We'll struggle to stay dry-aah-eyed.
We'll take that oval
For one big Louisville
Ride.

I loved Bay Meadows. Box E-9 was mine the two weekends of the San Mateo County Fair for years. BEST seats on the course.

STRANGELY every time I hear:

"I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day."

I thnik of that old famiilar place
