View Full Version : CT Million Dollar Race?

I thought Charles Town was having a million dollar race on Saturday, 04/18. Both the Equibase early entries and the early edition of the DRF show the race value at $500K.

Maybe their software can not go to $1 MD for CT purses? :confused:

On the surface, the race is for $500,000. But there's a clause in the conditions providing bonuses that allow for Grade 1 winners to run for a $1,000,000 purse, Grade 2 winners to run for $750,000, and Grade 3 winners for $600,000.

I think Commentator and Mast Track are the two Grade I winners entered.

So does this mean that each class (grade 1 winners, grade 2 winners, etc.) will be paid at the rate structure and for the respective purse that they are running for? Using 60%, 20%, 10%, 5%, 3%, and 2% for the top six finishers for the sake of discussion, horses would be paid as follows:

Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3 All Others
------- ------- -------- ---------
1st -> 600,000 450,000 360,000 300,000
2nd ->200,000 150,000 120,000 100,000
3rd ->100,000 75,000 60,000 50,000
4th -> 50,000 37,500 30,000 25,000
5th -> 30,000 22,500 18,000 15,000
6th -> 20,000 15,000 12,000 10,000

Is this correct? Also, Charles Town has been stretching the truth a little by announcing this to the public as a million dollar race. It would only be true if all the horses entered were Grade 1 winners. In reality, the race is more like 800K to 900K, which is still a huge purse. I guess "1 Million Dollar Purse" has a much better sound to it, even if it is not 100% correct. :)

In any event, congratulations to Charles Town for offering a race such as this!!

You have the purse structure right, based on the purse available based on their graded status, the usual distribution applies.

I think your purse analysis is right on the money.....As someone who has been going to CT for 20 years, it is really exciting and yeah, they are stretching the truth with the ads....I have been pretty disappointed with amount of local advertising and the last time I checked, it wasnt even on their web site.....The people who own the track dont seem to care too much about racing at all so this event was quite a pleasant surprise....cant wait til tomorrow

Very excited about this. I have family near CT and love going up there to watch the races. Pretty big for the credibility of the racing side of things. Hopefully its a sign of things to come!

Nice to see some positives about CT amidst all the recent negative posts.
This Saturday is a great day in CT history. Probably one of the best cards
available this year at any track up to this point. Race after exciting race with big pots. How these superstars of racing which are involved take to the bull ring track will be very exciting for horsemen and betters.
Congratulatins to the racing secretary and his staff. Fabulous job. :ThmbUp:
P.S....Lets pray that the State Vet does not scratch Commentator in the post parade.

Glad to see some "out of the box" thinking here in trying to get the best field possible . I have been espousing such for a while . My BiG idea is to vary the purse size for races depending upon field size, IE 6 go $100K 8 go 150K 10 go 200k. Maybe this could be combined with the G!,2,3 thing too in a matrix ? Which would give the biggest field size with the better horses. ?

It'll never happen that early, he'll wait until he gets to the gate !!

We are local and race at CT. While I don't like a lot of things Randy has done as Racing Secretary this is one good thing he has done.

Going to be an exciting evening and the weather is going to be really nice. Will try to get some pictures if I can.

Good deal...I am going to try to find out now and will post if I get an answer....the thought of one of the big horses getting scratched at the gate is very amusing

As for better then ever.......ok if you say so. :) I personally haven't had an issue with him but some close friends have. One thing is the breakdown rate has dropped like a rock that is for sure.
