About a year ago, I bought a software called Focus 2000 developed by ADPA a company I believe is owned by a Mr. Cole. Unfortunately, my laptop was stolen and thereby lost the software I was just starting to get used to. I have tried everything possible to contact Mr. Cole through ADPA with no success. Because I had used the software through Trackmaster, I contacted them to see if they have any idea as to what happened to Mr. Cole. The reasoning is that nobody knows. I am launching an appeal thru the auspices of this website to see if there is any one who can help me secure a copy of the software. I will be extremely grateful. Thanks NFORSOR

I have the program myself and went through a computer crash over a year ago. When I loaded the program on the new hard drive, I had to get a new authorization. That was not a real problem at that time. More recently, when I went to their web site, there seemed to be some kind of virus had taken over their site. I was able to move around their site and even downloaded the Harness version demo. Today, when I went back to their site, every thing was BLANK. Don't know what is up with that. Sorry, wish I could be more helpful.

Lucky you it's still in your hard drive. May be one day you can retrieve it thru your own personal effort or that of a computer wiz. Because of the way I handicap, I have come to find focus a very useful tool. Thanks for the concern, anyway. Good luck

Looks like some kids have used an exploit to add links to gogo2me and a Russian site (kiddie hacker sites) to the front page.

You can still get there by http://www.adpa.com/focus.htm

Am wary of anybody saying their program beats flats, harness, and dogs. More wary when the last copyright update was 2005. Don't like the fact that the program has come down from $595 to $77 and has been on a 30 day sale for the past year. Wondering why the program is still named the same year as a decade ago. System requirements are from the Windows 98 era. Good luck with it.

The drop in price could be partially due to the fact their copyright ends this year.

I'm looking at the program now: Copyright (c) 1993-2009 ADPA Systems. All Rights Reserved.

That doesn't have anything to do with the duration of copyright. Just about everything you write is implicitly copyrighted whether you label it as such or not (even e-mails!)

I looked it up Bill, and you are right. I just don't understand the expiration date (year) of 2009.

Typically the confusion comes in with patents vs. copyrights. Patents have a more finite lifetime and do regularly expire. I'm glad I'm not a lawyer (BTW i am NOT a Lawyer) as things like copyright law would make my teeth itch. :D

Thanks for the explanation. I'm easily confused.:bang:

That means that the things on the website are copyrighted from 1993, the first date that anything was put online (and maybe on a dialup bulletin board back in 1993) to the present (or whatever year is the last that it was updated).

The PROGRAM, NOT the website. But, Bill already explained that too.

Then it means that versions or elements of the program have been copyrighted beginning in 1993 and ending this year.

I think I may have the download stored somewhere, let me know you if you still need it. But dont know how you will authorize the software though. I like the program, very easy to use and has some good methods with it. I definitely learned some things from it. Let us know if you ever get in touch with them.

Would this happen to be the same person who ran out on all the FOCUS2000 horse and greyhound program users?

I doubt it. The mailing address is in Kansas, and the website has been listed in archive.org since 1999. They make golf software and supplies. The similar name appears to be a coincidence.

Since the adpa.com (Focus handicapping software) website is still suspended by the host, I'm assuming that, for whatever reason, that the software is now abandoned. That being the case, I would assume that it's fair for the current users to find a way to get their software to work. I doubt that the encryption method would be hard to defeat, for somebody knowledgeable in such things. I wouldn't imagine it would be difficult to find such a person; there are online groups (clans/klanz, so to speak) who do that sort of thing for free. I don't condone such activity for ongoing, supported software, but the Focus software isn't supported anymore, and those who have bought it have the right (in my opinion) to use it, meaning to bypass whatever security exists. Of course, the existence of a "keygen" or "crack" would effectively allow anybody who could get a copy of the software (purchased or not) to now use it free, but there's no real way to help the purchasers without making the software effectively freeware.

When a work carries the notice "copyright 1993-2009", that means that various parts of the work were copyrighted during that time frame. The copyright lasts from the copyright date to 70 years beyond the author's death.

So, in the example, 2009 is not the end date of the copyright. It is the begin date for a portion of the work.

Each disk only has 3 installs available on it. Also, the ACTIVATION file only works on the original computer that it was installed on. I too have the 10 TRACK version, which is still on my PC, but when I tried to copy it onto my laptop, it wouldn't let me. The ACTIVATION file was for my PC, not my laptop.

Just to make this simple -- the activation code is tied to the hard drive in some way (probably the serial #) that the program was originally installed on. The program will not work on any other hard drive. While I'm not 100% sure of this, I know that many copy protection schemes work off of identifying the IDs of a hardware component (or components) to generate some kind of unique code. That way you can only do one install, and would have to contact the software publisher for another license for a second install (on a second computer, for example, or if you get a new computer that will obviously have new hardware).

Can the protection be bypassed? Sure, by someone who knows what they're doing. No, that person is not me nor do I know anyone who can.

You can see the date added on the files are too current, likely one of those
sites that duplicates what you have put in a search for.To hook you in.
Also if one does download something from a site like this, scan the file with
your antivirus or protective malware software first before installing it to your
pc.

I should have posted something when I first saw it here.

There are hundreds of such sites that promise every movie, song, and program from the past 20 years. They're easy to spot because they capture information from the actual sites (some via archive.org), and the description for the software or media is the same as what the original website or byline said.

If you paid by PayPal or credit card, start a dispute. The scammers that make these sites almost never dispute a chargeback.
