There is definitely some value on some of these, though by the time the poll is closed who knows what odds you get. Worth taking a shot on a few of the horses with an outside shot, I'd say. This Derby is shaping up to be very competitive and could lead to a nice return as the money gets spread around.

You would have to be absolutely insane to place any wagers on these until after the races have been run on Saturday.

this is the first time they've ever offered exactas, and most of the payoffs are huge at the end of day one of wagering...I only found a couple of payoffs under $100, and all the payoffs with the field were at least $200. Obviously this is all gonna change after this weekend, but if you spread yourself around some, you could possibly have some extra fun waiting for you come Derby Day.

For those wondering about a Pool 2 field horse finishing in the exacta come Derby Day, I did a little research and came up with some fairly interesting stuff. I couldn't find the Pool 2 data for the first year, 1999, so I don't know if Menifee was in the field that year, but here's what I found for the other nine years.

On three occasions, 1999, 2002, and 2004, a field horse won the Derby.
On four occasions, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008, a field horse finished second.
To look at it another way, in six out of 10 years, a field horse has run first or second.

So, in the sample of 19 total spots, seven field horses have hit the board, and in one year, 2002, they completed the exacta. That year, Perfect Drift was third and was an indvidual betting interest, so the FW exacta would have paid first and third, at least that's the way I read their rules.

Here's what the exacta paid each year that a field horse was involved:
1999: $727.80
2000: $66.00
2002: $1,300.80
2004: $65.20
2005: $9,814.80
2008: $141.60

Hope this helps if your considering playing the bet this weekend.

Sandpit,

Thanks for the info. I've been searching for justification to leave the field out of my exacta plays and it may be a lost cause, at least historically. Still, I expect that my primary combos will feature specific horses nonetheless.
