Anyone know exactly what this is? I know it is the designation for "waiver claiming" or something like that, but what is that? How does it compare to "Optional claiming". Where would it fit on a class scale? I don't see it too often but whenever I do it throws a curve at my handicapping. Thanks.

This was discussed on a previous thread. You can do a search to find it.

WCL is just a claiming race where 1 or more horses were given a waiver from being claimed because they are off a layoff. They are just regular old claiming races - nothing special.

Optional claiming races are mostly allowance races with a caveat that allows horses, who do not otherwise qualify, to enter but for a claiming price.

Try this too:

Anyone have any stats on how the horses waived from the claim are doing overall?

I would imagine some trainers or owners are very good at taking advantage of this but don't have the database to check.

There's only 33 so far in the entire country, so unless you're willing to extrapolate from sample sizes of 1 (or 2 at most this far), the trainer-good-at-waiver-claiming angle is nowhere near ready for primetime.

Of the 33 so far, here's the winners' prices, a positive ROI, small sample size notwithstanding.

$22.40
$21.60
$19.00
$17.80
$7.20

I'm unwinding the bankroll ;)

Thanks for the info! It'll be interesting to see if it holds up

I wish NJ had this type of option within the conditions. It would help those trainers and owners who have J breds to be able to keep them on the farm for the winter and not worry about losing them 1st time out.

Robaroyal was waiver claiming at Oaklawn on Saturday and won for fun at 25-1.
