Yes, the man you love to hate, or hate to love, Rep. Barney Frank will introduce legislation to overturn the despited online gambling law saying it hurts European trade. In this economic climate I'd say it stands a good chance of passing..

Thanks Andi;

It’s about time and the original Neanderthal’s who drafted it should not be forgotten by people who believe in an adult’s right to choose.

Jim Leach (R-IA)
Robert Goodlatte [R-VA]
Bill Frist [R-TN]
Jon Kyl [R-AR] A personal favorite and one of the leading pro lottery hypocrites.
Signed into law by our former President under the veil of the “Safe Port Act” in classic Washington style. Passed at midnight the day of the 2006 elections / while having ZERO language of the gambling bill. It was added days later to a conference report and the reading of the report was…of course / waived.

BTW / for the record: Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) and Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) did try to get around the insanity with the “Skill Game Protection Act” to no avail.

snip from Reuters:
"Anurag Dikshit, a founder of PartyGaming, pleaded guilty in December to Internet gambling charges and agreed to pay $300 million in fines."

Online pundits will have a field day with that person's name!

I'm ambivalent about its (UIGEA) chances of being overturned. From a "personal freedom" perspective, I view it as one more freedom lost thanks to the religious bigots who framed it and got it attached to a bill that was destined to pass. From a practical and political perspective I don't know how the majority of legislators view the possible WTO sanctions that might arise out of it remaining in place.

I believe that the main impetus to overturning the legislation is coming from the poker players' organizations. Are there any members of the Poker Players' Alliance (or whatever its called) who are regulars here and who could provide some additional info about how support for Frank's efforts is being handled?

Rich: I know a number of people that are members of The PPA (that is their correct name BTW) and they are certainly pushing hard to regulate internet poker, tax it and repeal UIGEA. Former republican senator Alfonse D'Amato from New York is now their chairman.............

With all due respect Tom; one has NOTHING to do with another.

It’s the amendment process that railroads through all types of garbage because for some unholy reason; individual measures can’t be voted on. We have been a victim of this process for decades.

If you want to get this measure passed; attach it to the “Though shall not beat children with a crowbar act” and have an out when the lone person paying attention asks why they voted for the attached measure.

“Well; I can’t vote for caving in children’s skulls…can I” / or / “We must have safe ports…don’t we.”?

It’s all part of the shell game we all fall victim to and seem to tolerate...election after election after election. And / or defend depending upon whose party is arranging the shells. :bang:

I think the rolled eyes denotes sarcasm. I'm quite sure Tom gets the two aren't related.

Thanks; I’ll try and participate a little slower next time.

Tom; I guess you were kidding; it’s a coin flip on the net if you (I) can read someone’s intent. If I was wrong I apologize. Even when we disagree your one of my favorite people here; but don’t take back a word of post which is aimed at the process. Just typing the word lottery / or the name Jon Kyl I go ‘Full Metal Jacket.

Exactly right. We had just such a procedure pulled on us in NJ many years ago, when the esteemed Gov. Kean ruled the state.

It was called the "NJ Major League Baseball Bill" (or something to that effect) and what it authorized was the state of NJ to buy or move a major league team to NJ. I can still see Kean, with his wide gap-tooth grin, on Tv wearing a baseball cap with an "NJ" on it...

What was included in the "fine print" was a provision that gave the NJ Sports & Exposition authority sweeping powers. Under the bill, the NJSEA could buy or build anything they thought would further the objectives of the authority.

In short order, a racetrack - Monmouth Park - was bought, and an aquarium in Camden was built.

Needless to say, major league baseball has never come to NJ, and the legislators knew it would never come when they crafted the bill.

However, the real aim, giving the NJSEA great authoritative power, did come.

Which was all politicians ever cared about anyway...

And in statewide issues, there are politicians who object to on line poker or live poker rooms but again support state lotteries.
Anyone getting this?

http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE51J50E20090220As far as I am concerned this idea of not being able to legally wager becuase of the state one lives in is hogwash.
BTW . Just recently an NC State supreme court judge ruled that the State's ban against video poker is unconstitutional because the Cherokee Indians have video gaming at their Reservation Casino.
Eventually states which are cash starved due to the economy will turn to gambling as a source of revenue.
It is the church lobby and their cronies on the religious right that keep the status quo.
