I'm still alive but I'm without a shoe again. I couldn't find the board on Sunday. That made the decision to pick winners as oppose to longshots pretty easy. 174 of 2686 left. I've fallen to 33rd in the Challenge and 7th in the winners contest.

My picks for 2/18

R1 - #1 Sometimes Maple 10/1 ... #2 Consulate is the leading contest choice and the M/L favorite, with 49% selection rate which is a real headshaker to me. The #2 isn't a clear choice on class or speed, so other than the post, Dave Miller and some gate speed I'm not sure what the excitement is. #9 My Man Ben 7/2 outclasses these and is faster than this field if he is good. Big drop in class and some breaks was enough to lead me elsewhere. However, if he is sound, he probably wins. #1 Sometimes Maple will be a good price, is dropping in class, doesn't break and is as fast as anyone in here other than the #9. The pole should keep her close and I think she'll trot by atleast a few of these.

R7 - #6 Artic Stretch 7/2 ... #8 Major Hottie is the leading contest choice and M/L favorite but I'm not a huge fan of useful horses from small barns going in for a tag the first time. Couple that with the three week break and I'd rather run off the board with someone else. I will say, usually when Capone moves one in class, up or down, they are live. I chose #6 Artic Stretch while holding my breath. I could see this horse regressing off his last effort, which was sharp. He goes 2nd time lasix and has enough gate speed to give Miller options. Both Warhol and Crystal Guy are sharp right now and this guy was within shouting distance of those two last week.

R9 - #3 Classic Star 3/1 ... Classic Star is the M/L choice but #4 Get That Cheese is the contest choice. I'm hoping Classic Star gets a stalking trip because if she can run back to her effort on 2/6 she should win this. I'm hoping her last effort was dull because she found herself on the lead.

I had Consulate just because he was lightly raced in a horrid field. They've really made them tough the past week or so. The Brennan horse from post 10 was an inspired pick. If I had him, I would be terrified of breakage. First time big track, Minister of Meth from the 10 postage, figuring to leave early ... :eek: . Only one contestant had him. :ThmbUp:

In leg 2, I got off Artic Stretch, and I was almost sold on Gingras' horse. Then I looked at the earnings box: 0-for-24 last year and winless this year. I then jumped over to Tetrick's horse on the rail, Alard Hanover. Perfect trip and ... nothing. :ThmbDown: .

In leg 3, I went for Get That Cheese.

I could swear Artic Stretch finished in the money ... :confused: .

As for tonight, I'm pretty chalky, I guess. I just don't see the toteboard blower-uppers tonight:

Lovely Hotspur ... surprisingly not pounded in the contest;

Pink Water Emile ... pounded indeed in the contest (:Shrugging.);

Lady Sometimes ... pretty popular in the contest.

Was Sears just throwing the race ? WTF ?!? She was 8 or 10 lengths back at the start. Did it have something to do with the severe winds ?

I have no idea. My mouth dropped when I saw it. The worst part of it was, she raced pretty well after spotting the field atleast 5 lengths at the gate.

It wasn't just my contest that went up in smoke either, I had quite a bit of real money wrapped up in the race. I thank the gambling gods that she hung around 1/1 and 6/5 so long. She ended up going off at 9/5 and had I known I could get 9/5 I might have really taken a beating.

This guy, a trotter, closed in 55 flat last time. Now, what with the crazy winds, I understand it may be worse than looked, but I'm hard pressed to find a pacer tonight with such a fraction. Anyway, he's my pick in the contest, and he's only picked by 24% of the harness enthusiasts.

I also have Michelle's Gemstone and Roman Shark. I took the latter because a HUGE majority went with Dr. Viagra, so I was emboldened ( ;) ) to take a shot. :eek:

Sorry yer out, Sir. Worse men than you survive. Such is la vie. :(

Hey Toe, "Lucky Jim" is awesome right now, scary awesome......the only problem I have with him is that 26 and change last 1/4, often enough that kind of last fracition will cause a "trotter" to bounce & break, otherwise, I will stay with him until he finds out how fast and far he can go.....He is a freak right now......

G.L in your unfinishd journey......

best,

(4th) Light Up The Sky is lightly enough raced to keep firing. :ThmbUp: .

(5th) Only because of postage worries, I'm throwing out Splendid Kisser. Brother Ray is my wimpy play, and he is picked by a vast contest majority.

(9th) Showmethefame is my pick. I'm not on the Dodgeball bandwagon, as a class drop by itself is not enough for me. Also,Ready For Battle may romp, but I am itching for a price in here. Tough, tough heat.
