the tri pool was bigger than the super pool. (more players/bettors)

It might have been a case of the tri being 1-5-3 and the supe being 1-5-ALL-ALL.

This is due to the pool size and number of winners. It could've been because more people hit the super than the tri, therefore the super had to be split with more winners. Or, maybe fewer people played the super so the entire super pool (not the pool for specific horses) was tiny. Look at it like a pizza, the more people you split it with the less you get. The fewer pizzas people buy the less pizza there is. (Except in this case Pizza Hut always gets the first couple of pieces).

In extremely rare situations the show payout will top the win payout. If you can find out where these opportunities exist you can hit some really nice payouts playing a heavy (win) favorite who ends up being a huge (show) longshot. Unfortunately these opportunities are always at tracks with tiny pools, so if you play $50 you will mostly win back your money. But to turn $2 to $10 on a show bet with a horse that easily takes the race, 2 or 3 times a card, is pretty cool. At a local track I spend more time watching the pools right before post than I do reading the PP data for these opportunities.

You figure a heavy QH favorite finishes in the money app. 75% of the time. So you see a heavy favorite in the win pool with $0 in the show pool and it could be an opportunity. This only happens at fairground type tracks that most likely do not simulcast their product.

It's not terribly unusual to see Tri payoffs higher than the super. It's mostly due to higher pools in the Tri, fewer winners in the Tri due to a combination of 2 or 3 high odds horses hitting the super , resulting in no winning ticket without at least one "ALL". The "ALL" enables more bettors to hit the super ticket, thus, reducing the payoff.
