I flipped the Saturday - Tuesday numbers at Kawartha, I'm sure nobody cares about that anyway.

The surprise to me was Northfield's action. I would have bet (and lost:)) that they wouldn't be higher than Yonkers.

I'll check them again when Summer gets here, and more tracks are racing.

One time when I was at the track I asked many different people why they prefer Northfield to Yonkers when the quality of drivers and horses is so much better at Yonkers. Strangely, they all commented in one way or another that Northfield was presented in a better way. Things like Yonkers just looks weird. They look like they are running up hill at the beginning of the race and that the camera angle looks off in the lane. Many people said their favorite was Meadowlands not because of the quality of the racing but because the races look good on the TV. I guess all of this is important to someone just there to gamble.

Its great to see NFLD's handle so high.
IMHO they are a high betting track because
A.) They race all year (no breaks)
B.) Generally full fields
C.) Run 13+ races everyday and waste very little time going postward.
D.) The NFLD feed/skin is very high quality.
E.) Simulcasted at nearly all venues

Reasons for tracks like FHLD, DD, YRX and Calx dont handle nearly as much.
A.) Not simulcasted at a lot of OTBs and ADWs
B.) Times not so appealing 12:30 5:30 8:55
C.) Field size to incosisntent.
D.) Track feed is not very appealing

FWIW even thought northfield is my home track Dover is my favorite harness track.

best,

He has disappeared like a thief in the night. He is probably onto his 18th book now. You know he wrote 16 books in 2008 and thats at a clip of one book per 22 days.

Only problem is that I do not trust Northfield.

Why? Simple economics. Many races there carry a purse of $1800-$3000 (the Monday, Feb 9th card has purses in the 13 races of $1800, 1800, 1800, 2000, 2000, 2000, 1800, 2000, 3000, 2500, 2000, 2000 and 1800 respectively.) If a horse wins a race for an $1800 purse, the trainer and driver get $45 each and the owner $810. Yet the pools per race there easily go over $100,000 (with the exception of the first two races.)
Even Stevie Wonder can see that the horsemen would much rather dive into the mutuel pools than try to survive on such anemic purses. C'mon, the exotic pools of a single Northfield race will be three to four times higher than the total purse distribution for the entire evening!

I'm not saying that chicanery actually takes place there, but you can't turn your nose up at these numbers.

That is why I quit that place a long time ago, too many unexplained things in my book, and too often as well (I can live with sometimes)......Tons of chalk also.......Who needs it ?......
