I was just checking the results sheet for Kawartha Downs for Jan 24 and I noticed something really strange.

Their total handle for that day was $12993 and the total purses paid out for the 10 race card was $66400.

How can that be possible? Is somebody subsidizing Kawartha Downs is what I would like to know. Perhaps someone out there can help solve this riddle.

Slots revenue indeed. At one time at Sudbury Downs the handle was 6 000$ while the total purses paid out was over 50 000$.

harness racing is really an exciting sport. i honestly question why the powers that be do basically nothing to attract new blood into the sport. even though they have the slot revenues there is so much more to be done.

Dont really care what they pay out as purses even though I am sure it is good for horsemen. But for the life of me I cant imagine betting at a track whose total handle is $6000. Betcha a mighty $10 win bet would bring a 10-1 shot to even money.

There was an interesting item yesterday on the Standardbred Canada website (http://www.standardbredcanada.ca/print/6417) regarding the industry meetings that are currently winding up in Vegas.

Direct link to the page fails.

Kawartha's signal is broadcast only on Tuesdays. Nonetheless, it's situations like these which show in broad daylight the uselessness of horse racing when one arm bandits become a form of welfare for horsemen.

Zman,
I agree.

An in addition, there's really no difference between Ontario and the US.

In neither instance have the slots and their revenues been utilized for anything except to increase the profits of the horse industry.

When IN FACT and by logical definition, the subsidation should have been used to increase the customer traffic.
