I saw an add for internet access a while back.
You got a modem and plugged it into the wall outlet and got access anywhere you took the modem. I just can't remember the name of it!

Hot wire, something like that?

Anyone know what I'm talking about ( I know, I know, loaded question!)

Are you talking about a phone modem (AKA "aircard")? They usually just plug into a USB socket on your laptop.

I'm not exactly sure what you're speaking of, but I do know that you can teather off of a Blackberry's internet connection and pick-up service. The live feed through TwinSpires is as a good as a land cable line.

Theory has been around for a while. It is referred to as BPL or broadband over power line.

You can do an internet search of the name for more information. I think there are problems with electrical interference.

BPL is likely what you heard. There are solutions available from various vendors. I've seen them on the shelves at the local Fry's. Check out the web sites for LinkSYS and D-Link among others.

What exactly are you interested in doing? Use your PC from any room in your residence, wired and/or unwired? Or, are you looking for a true mobile access to the internet from your PC where ever you might go?

Forgot about that one. Seems to be dying due to inability to contain leakage.

This was a specific product - a modem that plugs into any wall outlet, you plug into it, and you have internet access, so long as there is satellite service in the area. Live Wire, Hot Wire, something like that. Lost my link to the website. You could take it with you anywhere you traveled.

Lots of stuff out there if you use "BPL" and "modem" in your favorite search engine.

Here's one that appears to be a trade group (http://plugtek.com/broadband-power-line-tutorial.shtml) that is a tutorial.

This lends a whole new meaning to MODEM. I guess it still is modulating and de-modulating signals just not over twisted wire pairs!

Hey Tom

As a person who truly travels everywhere in this country, I use Verizon Wireless

Air Card and I get online almost everywhere, and I do mean almost anywhere.

It is what I use for all my onlines services, and for the most part I can watch all the races in real time, well except for the 30 second delay on Youbet, where Twinspires TV is much better, and more enjoyable to watch.

I never heard of anything better, faster, or available everywhere, if you know of it, please let me know and I will look into it, thanks

Patrick

The site I posted is quite good. Ya'll need to register to post, but reading what the users are using will give you some insight prior to committing to a contract.
