Paulick calls them...and he says the right things about most of his choices...and I agree with almost all...my exceptions would be trainer...despite drug positives, Paulick beleive Asmussen will get it...IMO, Dutrow should get it and I wish Baffert had been nominated...his BC day was outstanding and to train Midnight Lute up to his back to back wins...is awesome.
He's right about the filly division...we all wish Eight Belles could get the award, but Proud Spell deserves it. What they should do is present Eight Belles and her connections with some special award...but that won't happen.
I am still up in the air about Horse of the Year...as stated by Paulick, Curlin will most probably get it....but if my vote counted, sorry guys....it'd be for Zenyatta.

I am going to watch the show (TVG) and look foward to some great video clips and thank you speeches...should be a fun :jump: watch.

Probably so....but it's the only game in town...as long as it's televised, I don't care who has it:)

What do you think of Paulick's picks, Cj?

Where's Ken Rudulph...and Frank Lyons?
Ken's exchanges with the late Merv Griffin were hilarious at previous Eclipse Awards shows. Frank will probably be sitting at the IEAH table, telling stories he can't repeat on TV!

Frank was scheduled to be on Los Al last Saturday Night. Thursday, Todd was joking there was NO WAY Frank would ever make it there; Friday afternoon, Mike Joyce did a faux "TVG News Update", announcing that Frank would NOT be appearing on 'The Quarters'. Too Bad, he could really loosen up there!

We have Dish Network, and I don't think we pay extra for TVG or HRTV...I was thrilled when I found out we get those 2 channels because we never did before we got Dish Network...
anyway...the show is at this moment recording...I'll watch it tomorrow and will give ya the high's & low's...unless someone beats me to it.
I don't dare come here again now until after I watch the show...don't want to know the winners or anything before I see the show.

Talk about connection-bias. Big Brown wins as many grade 1s as Curlin and Zenyatta, wins two of the biggest races of the year (Ky. Derby, Preakness), beats older horses on TURF, and can't beat Zenyatta in HOY voting....

Whatever...

Agreed!
I thought Curlin's 3 year old campaign was much better than his 4 year old. Big Brown deserved horse of the year, I doubt we will ever see a horse do what big brown did and not get HOY.

Curlin won in Dubai, came back to keep winning, tried turf, got beat by a BC turf winner and beat another one, then tried the poly. He danced a lot of dances, showed up for all but one, and still ran well into the stretch in that one.

BB beat some bad 3 yos twice.

The filly was perfect, but you can't be HOY is you run in restricted races.

I saw only one choice for HOY and he won it. Was BB 3yo champ? He deserved that ( like it means anything with that crop of crap!).

JMHO, but it's all I got!;)

Yes....agreed...sorta like a political speech at the Oscar's...wrong venue....but, very handicapper in the country needs to thank that guy...he said all the right things, and although it wasn't the right place...where else would he have had the chance to speak to the industry leaders all in one place...kudos:ThmbUp: to this guy...it was a brave thing to do.

I was quite surprised at that announcment...wonder why they decided on bringing him back....maybe he was tearing up the pasture at the farm...whatever, it's great....and I hope he comes back as good as ever...he's an incredible horse, and although I was in hopes that Midnight Lute would get the award...Benny deserves it.

I agree too...we all knew BB wouldn't get HoY, but I expected he'd get more votes...and for those who say he beat a bunch of bad horses...besides his win in Dubia...who did Curlin beat?
I guess this debate could go on and on....bottom line, I guess...it's over and we live with the results.

I was happy with almost all the winners...especially Proud Spell and Indian Blessing...the acceptance speech for Indian Blessing was wonderful...
I'm really mad  because I was recording the show, but right after the Apprentice jockey award, the recording stopped:( so I didn't get to see Proud Spell get her award, or the HoY....maybe I can see a video clip of Proud Spell's moment...
Paasch accepting for Stardom Bound was also emotional...wonderful stuff. And the slow motion video of her on the track was beautiful

I thought it went rather well, some akward moments...especially with Gary Stevens messing up...I guess he was very nervous for some reason...he's usually so well spoken...
I thought Stonerside should have gotten Breeder.

Ivarone said all the right things...Mr. Slick did good.

I agree...I was excited about seeing him run in Dubia....and his win was powerful and exciting....but other than that, not much there...we'd wait for him to race again, and when he did, IMO, it looked like he really had to work...it just never looked 'easy' in my eyes.
Big Brown sure did give us some thrills...even the 'nail biters'. Damned shame these two never had the chance to face off in a race.

JMHO, but it's all I got!;)All three had huge holes in their HOY resume in my opinion. I have no problem with Curlin winning it, but to see BB such a distant third is a farce.

Curlin beat NOTHING in 2008. Wanderin Boy, Well Armed and Asiatic Boy aren't going down in the annals of racing as fierce competitors (not to mention Past the Point and Merchant Marine).

So, we have Big Brown who faced a weak 3yo crop and Curlin who faced a weak older group and Zenyatta who never faced males and raced primarily on California artificial (although to be fair, she did venture out ONCE to run on the dirt where she kicked butt).

Both Big Brown and Curlin lost the big ones in 2008 (Belmont for BB and BC Classic for Curlin). All three won four Grade 1s each (counting Dubai World Cup for Curlin)...

It's total BS that BB got shafted royally in the voting. Any other trainer/owner combo for BB and he definitely winds up in second place over Zenyatta.

interesting that Mr.Ivarrone, unlike any other owner, never mentioned
the efforts of Kent Desoreaux but praised all the other owners and
the trainer in his "warm" recollections of BB.

Add that to the fact Ivarrone praised Prado for his ability to win
with Benny and you get a true sense of what IAEH is truly about

Mr Moss
actually reappeared to thank Mike Smith for his efforts on
Zenyata, which left the door open for Ivarrone..

The hearbreaking scene was watching Kent reminiscing with his wife abou BB,
and ultimately never given any credit for the two big wins in the Triple Crown.

But then again, it was Kent's fault, the horse couldn't win the Belmont
right :bang:

i like kent, he is a good man. all he did was ride the horse. he did what durtrow told him to do. if you put rudy rodriguez on the horse you would most likey have the same result.

steve asmussen uses shawn bridgemohan as much as he can, because shawn knows exactly how steve like's his horse's ridden.

i always liked to stay with the same rider on a horse because a guy should know what the horse likes or doesn't like after he was on it.

the guy that deserves the credit for big brown is dutrow. he figured out the right blinkers, and that the horse loves to be on the outside of other horses at the start of a race. after big brown's poor performance he brought him back to top levels. it actually looked like big brown became braver in new jersey when he had to dig down deep and gave everything he had.

most important thing about big brown is he gave us something to talk about for years to come.

You and I can agree on issues ... away from OT . I'll add that its a shame that aside from one race there wouldn't be this discussion . The most surprising thing about my Eclipse Award comments (I prefer that to ''rant'') was the positive feedback at the cocktail party afterward. Steve Crist, Alex Waldrop, Gary Stevens and the owner of Zenyatta, Jerry Moss, were especially gracious. I did my best to remind the powerful of racing that we bettors are a powerful force too; the customers of any business can't be ignored if you want them to remain customers. I am not naive enough to believe I accomplished anything major last Monday night but we have to start somewhere and if this was the wrong venue, point me to right one.
For me, the best line of the night belonged to my wife,Sally. When I pointed out Mike Smith to her and said I thought he was one of the best jockies on the planet, she said '' and he's a great dancer''. All that and an Eclipse Award too, ain't the beer cold.
