This is the last big weekend for Graded stakes money to get into the Derby field of twenty. There still are plenty of horses, with a fair amount of pub with alot still left to do.

GRADED STAKES EARNINGS THRU 4/6/03 with adjustments for Kafwains dq in La Derby:

1. Kafwain 684,800 Baffy skipping the Derby with this one wouldn't surprise me
2. Buddy Gill 668,730 they'd be wise to stop on this horse right now
3. Empire Maker 622k
4. Peace Rules 570k Frankel often speaks with forked tongue, distance limitations hmmmmmm
5.Lone Star Sky 343,935 this years $ Bill, keeps clunking up for a piece of the pie

Let me pause here for a moment to reveal upcoming Graded events and their payouts:

4/12
Bayshore.....90k.....30k.....16.5k.....9k.....4.5k

Wood......450k.....150k.....82.5k.....45k.....22.5 k

Bluegrass.....465k.....150k.....75k.....37.5k..... 22.5k

Arky Derby.....300k.....100.....50k.....30k.....20k.... .

4/19
Lexington.....201.5k.....65k.....32.5k.....16,250. ....9.75k

Derby Trial.....62k.....20k.....10k.....5k.....3k

There are a dozen horses that could collect a 3rd or 4th place finish to get over $100k.

Which brings me to ATS.

He's sitting at 95k. No doubt among the top 22, there are some that will not run. Which ones, noone knows for certain. Those that fall to way side will be replaced by new earners in the upcoming stakes.

Ten Cents A Shine 46,240 [Lukas transfer]
Brancusi 30k
Man Among Men 12k
Great Notion O/T have D.F. big fig in Oaklawn stks $0
Ministers Wildcat 40k will he recover in time to run somewhere
Private Gold 20k [Byrne, part ownership B&B Lewis]
Saintly Look 79.5k
Aristocrat 50k Pletcher
Offlee Wild 72k
During (Baffy runner) $0
Senor Swinger [recent Baffy purchase] $0

Several others have enough earnings, but only if O/T's change their minds and decide to run.

Most of those are seriously trying, not to mention other n'er do wells. Perhaps ATS's fate is already sealed.

May they all come home safely!

Thank you. A ton of info and insight.

Anyone else get the feeling that it may be a longshot year? Where's the power? Frankel's horse romped in Florida but how much money could you have made over the last 20 years booking the Florida Derby winner in the Ky. Derby? Every year it seems that the California horses burn money unless they prep out East first.

I am really interested in seeing how well Badge of Silver runs in the Bluegrass on Saturday. He is training superbly and just recorded a great mile work over the track. Word has spread that the horse had throat surgery after poor last race which hurts the price. Werner, though is a quality trainer. The Keeneland track fits that horse style perfectly. Very athletic and smooth moving colt with quality speed. What scares me is that if he wins, we he just be a tease for the Derby at a cheap price?

Actually, I seem to remember Monarchos, Unbridled, Thunder Gulch, and Swale winning the Ky Derby and Fla Derby.

The Blue Grass is far worse, with one winner since Spectacular Bid in 1979 winning both, and that was Strike the Gold. The last winner to even run in the Blue Grass was Thunder Gulch in 1995.

CJ: There is no getting things past you. LOL. I don't remember all those prices, but Monarchos and Thunder Gulch were very good prices. I guess now that Empire Maker a probable short price, I would automatically look elsewhere and try to capture the improbable---like War Emblem wiring the field, although that was sure hard to see before the race with all that speed he was facing.
