I am curious at to what someone could expect to pay monthly on utilities for a bar and grill of around 3,000 to 4,000 sq feet with kitchen serving traditional sports bar type menu? (just a ballpark figure)

Thank you in advance if you can help.

I will try to extrapolate............

I have been involved in much larger operations in Cleveland, Columbus and North Carolina.........

I have consulted two different individuals who have worked in the area, again much larger places (35k square feet, to 55k sq feet) they estimate you would see total utilities of 1500 -2k a month depending on how many hours you are open............. 50 cents a sq foot plus or minus regional differences is a number that was discussed when I brought this up for you, in conversations just an hour or so ago..........

Don't be afraid to ask around. Pop into a local place that is similar to what you are considering and ask. It can't hurt. Many lower level managers probably won't know. But the Asst. GM's and GM's will know...........

FYI, Video Games and Pool Tables take up much more electricity (pool table lights etc) size of Walk in coolers-freezers etc can be important. Are you serving fresh or frozen? These will all have an affect.

If you want more specific info on where I get my numbers, PM me.......

This article estimates utility costs to be 4-7% of sales.

I've been working with a $1200 to $1500 range. It appears I may at least be in the ballpark.

wouldn't worry about utilities as your bigger costs will be food and labor.
food cost could be anywhere from 30%--48% labor 20% 30% of your food dollar. depends on what type of food you'll serve. white table cloth or dinner or bar/food.

I would wish you luck in your endeavor but that smoking ban is running people out of business/making things very tough for businesses of that type in Cincinnati. When they can cross the river and not be subject to these restrictions it really leaves business owners of that ilk in a tough way. I have never smoked a cigerette in my life but I still think its ridiculous how smokers are harassed.

Not really sure if the current economy would be a good enviornment for it, people are at least at the surface cutting costs, but again I wish you luck. I would make it N Ky though and not Cincinnati.

I have been stairing at this post for two days now......

are you kidding on these numbers? You run those numbers and you will be out of business quick.........care to elaborate at the risk of continuing a thread that shouldn't be continued?

may be a Mcdonalds or other fast foods places will run 14-20% FC and low labor costs, but if one is going to run a restaurant unless its a small place, "mom and Pop" as there called and all the family works there you'll have some high costs. cooks alone avg 14.00 -18.00 dollars/hr. good experienced chefs will ask for 45,000 a year. where i work the chef makes 90 grand and we don't do over 1.6 mil food and beverage. plus we have 10 cooks/sous chefs and the the sous make at least 30 grand.
ok but the smaller the place the lower the costs but not much volume.
and it dependes on the size and what type of food. go to ruth chris steak house and check out the price of a filet. go to a "mom and pops" check out the same thing.

ps yes and a lot of places do go out of business.

copier be careful small ones are probably o.k but watch the big ones the electricity they use is a killer. Toshiba 2860 kicked my wifes bill up a few hunderd a month by being on and not in use. We didn't realize that it needed to be programmed to be energy effecient.

Its a used machine and we just started to pay the electric bill ourselves so we had no idea. I went and looked at the electric meters (there were 4 others)they were spinning at a slow rate ours was spinning about 3-4 times faster. Started unplugging things and turning off things one at a time. When we turned off the copier our meter slowed to the speed of the others. Only use it for big jobs now.

Be careful ask about energy effecient machines, lights etc.ask if they have to be programmed. If may sound silly but could save you a few bucks.

I don't know, I get lots of it through osmosis. My wife has been doing it for close to 25 years and currently runs an 8 million a year operation. She has run places that do up to 12 million.

Btw, her current Restaurant/Sports Bar ends the fiscal year in about 10 days. She is on track for 40% profit...........
100 Employees, 7 Managers work for her (She is the GM) plus a kitchen manager. I ran a company that specializes in Restaurant Mechanical work (HVAC/Refrigeration) so I get it honest..........I know my way around it..........lets leave it at that.........

40%? No way.

Average pre-tax profit margins range from 4-7% for most restaurants. A couple of friends have a restaurant and if they hit 5% for the year they are thrilled.

Is she running a casino/whore house out of the kitchen?

is this supposed to be some kind of crack........?

I have been out all afternoon and just got back........

You don't know the whole story, in fact I posted a reply with the details earlier today........ and had it deleted because I decided to not have this discussion because I knew it was going to turn out like this............

You are obviously an expert............ we can all bow to your supreme knowledge. Btw, the wife's place had 980k in sales last month. It's not all food. 57% went to the bottom line.

This is no small Sports bar, this is a large 55k square foot place. A large volume chain........that doesn't have to rely on just restaurant sales. Of course you would have known all that if I had left my previous post up......but I thought better of it.......... there are just too many wingnuts lurking for me to release the details...... btw, that reminds me, Hey 46, how you doing?
