My grandson has brought his laptop over again. this time he has the nasty virus mentioned in title. I have downloaded both smithfraudfix and microtrends solutions. Cannot start in safe mode. ran smithfraudfix's program and got text file. could not run microtrend's as computer keeps refreshing desktop and cannot get zip file opened.
I thought these teeny boppers were supposed to be experts, this is second time he brought infected laptop to me. :)
I am nearing the point of purchasing boot disk and format c: any ideas prior to this drastic measure ?
running windows vista

Teeny boppers might be considered "tech experts"; however, they are still naive about protection. Anyway, not being able to boot into safe mode is a problem. There is a little known option that forces Windows to boot into Safe Mode. I am not that familiar with Vista, but if you can get to msconfig via the Start Menu Search box you might be able to run your fixes.

Here is a link to the steps to force Safe Mode on Boot. Don't forget to turn off the option after your problems are (hopefully) solved. Force Safe Mode (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/force-windows-to-boot-into-safe-mode-without-using-the-f8-key/)

If the other fixes don't work try running SuperAntiSpyware. Download here (http://www.superantispyware.com/).

Try downloading the linux based Avira Antivir Rescue System (http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html)

... Do this on an uninfected computer.

Download the executable (http://dlpro.antivir.com/down/vdf/rescuecd/rescuecd.exe) ( .exe ) which will prompt you to burn the .iso to a cd when you run the program. Leave the cd in the tray and reboot.

You have to change your system to use the cd as the first boot device.

You can usually do this by hitting the del or esc keys when your computer first starts. Watch the black screen for a message that looks like 'Hit [?] key to enter setup'

Gentlemen,
I tried both your suggestions. Safe start worked but did not help my problem. Went back to regular start. Antivir finally got it downloaded and ran it two or three times. Computer no longer refreshes desktop. But still have problems as i can not open recycle bin and probably a few other things. But I had to put that thing down for a bit and refresh my mind with a race or two.
Thanks again.

This will let you try Regcure.

I have used the program for two years without any problems.
