I patronize this track all summer and spring, and have been to all the AR derbies, but have never been for opening day.

any reason why I should go....am I missing something? I feel more inclined toward Monday, which has some stakes races.

I keep thinking I should *experience* opening day, I dunno.

pros and cons?

From the Oaklawn website:

"On the opening Friday, January 16, Oaklawn will offer the traditional 50-cent corned beef sandwich promotion, then follow that with a Curlin bobble-horse giveaway on Monday, January 19 (one free to each paid admission while supplies last). Monday, January 19, will also be the occasion of the $50,000 Smarty Jones Stakes, the first opportunity for local fans to see some of the stars of the resident three-year-old crop with hopes for Triple Crown fame before the Summer arrives. If you decide to go on opening day let me know as I should have at least one running opening day in a 3yo filly mdn special weight. I do not plan to go but will gladly let you represent me in the winner's circle if we can get the job done. I am sure it will be crowded as the people in Arkansas really support the track better than anywhere excluding Keeneland.

LRL,

Congratulations on your win today at OP with Payton d'Oro! She stretched out nicely for that extra distance and ran a beauty!

It was nothing short of thrilling to stand in the winner's circle----truly a unique experience for me-----and I thank you heartily for the opportunity to participate in your success! :jump:

Reaching out the way you do, and being so willing to share with others the thrill of being part of this sport, is what it's all about.

I have been there on Opening Day Twice. Last time was around 7 years
ago. A bunch of us lunatics rented a Bus ( very nice one ) and drove
down to Arkansas from St Louis.
Of course it was all complimentary. U see many of us either grew up
with the Owner of Joint .. or we know him from around town - or in
business etc.
Sooo .. brother Cella opened the safe and told us all to have fun. The
last time we saw him -- was at the party he tossed in downtown St Louis
.. the weekend that Smarty won the Derby.

Yawl do recall that Charlie put up 5 Million...that's 5,000,000 dollars .. for any horse who could win the big 3 year old races in Arkansas ..AND WIN the Derby !
Finally : the operations have been turned over to his son and to the folks who have been with him forever and a day.
You can now take part in various CASINO games. and Slots and
there is even a Horse Racing Game -- insert coins and play. OH yes
you can also wager on the outcomes of the races at Oaklawn ..
