Playing Delta Downs and there's a trainer listed as Mark Guidry. Is this guy the now retired jock or a different person?

The last I recall, Mark Guidry (the rider), wanted to become a steward.

How many SUCCESSFUL jockeys have gone on to be SUCCESSFUL trainers?
**I don't mean ANY rider or ANY trainer**

Bob Baffert didn't win many races as a jockey. Shoemaker wasn't a very good trainer.

How many have had Major League success doing both?

I can only think of two....Wayne Catalano & Freddy Head. I remember Ross Fenstermaker being a small man. Was he a jockey?

I've always liked Guidry on a horse and it wouldn't shock me to see him transfer that talent over to training.

Many jockeys become trainers after they retire, but most are not quite as successfull as Catalano. Cordero tried it for a while, then became an agent.

I guess they find it is much harder work, and the pay isn't that great.

Two recently retired jocks are running horses at DD, the aforementioned Mark Guidry and C.J. Woodley.

Does anyone know how long Steve Asmussen rode as an apprentice? I know he was in NY as a bug.

There's a trainer in MD named Benny Feliciano, who was also a jock. Same guy? If so, I didn't know he had a string at Tampa as well.

Woody Stephens started out as a jockey.

At 5' 8" and over 150 pounds he grew to big to ride.

For younger fans, he won over 200 stakes races as a trainer, including 5 straight Belmonts 1982-86. He trained Conquistador Cielo, Danzig, Swale, Forty Niner and other champions.

Cash was his father's son (i.e. Steve's brother)

I assume you are talking about Steve?

He took out his jockey's license at age 16. Rode for three years in New Mexico, California and New York before retiring because of weight ...

Veteran trainer Kenward Bernis (Delta Downs) rode as a young teen along with his brother Tee Red. Kenward is a colorful guy, always raises his Stetson in the winner's circle when he wins a race. His son was one of the last ones standing on Survivor a year ago and he was quite proud of that.

Along your lines of thinking, Randi Persaud fits as well. Randi & Bobby are tremendous horsemen. However, all four were below average as jockeys.

Mike McCarthy is an interesting one, he was a heads-up rider. Last I recall, he's running Todd Pletcher's west coast division. Shrewd move on both guys' part because prior to this, McCarthy did OK as a trainer on his own.

Agree about jockey-talent v. training talent. It seems similar to average athletes becoming good coaches.

Is that the same Mike McCarthy from FL?

Another former rider that started training within the last couple years is Ray Sibille.

Yes. I also remember Mr. McCarthy having plenty of success in the mid-atlantic & south east regions. (Delaware, Philadelphia, Gulfstream, Hialeah)

Wesley WardEclipse Award winning apprentice in the `80's, and a pretty decent trainer these days. I would dub him the best of the "what have you done for me lately" winner in this category.

John,

Did Woody ever win a Classic race(s)? Was he an above average rider?
