Through The Binocs- by Ed Fountaine www.nypost.com (http://www.nypost.com)
Starting today, Aqueduct begins 11-day Christmas break from live racing, and just in time, because too many horses have been dying here in past few weeks, including two yesterday in freak accidents.
In fifth race, 2-year-old gelding Routine Addendum was racing toward back of pack turning for home when Gold Prospect, Jeffrey Sanchez up, drifted out in front of him. Routine Addendum appeared to clip heels and fell, and in doing so, shattered his right front cannon bone. He was euthanized on the spot. Routine Addendum's rider, Sheldon Russell, escaped serious injury but was taken to the hospital for X-rays of his wrist.

Death in next race was even more gruesome. Nika, Kiaran McLaughlin-trained 2-year-old filly that cost 500G, broke through gate, dumping Alan Garcia, and ran off. Heading toward backstretch, she tried to jump rail, didn't make it and was impaled in her left shoulder. She got up, hobbled off again, then dropped in her tracks.

If you've got the stomach for it after yesterday's carnage, Big A will be open for simulcasting every day except Christmas and Christmas Eve, with races resuming Dec. 26, when pick 6 carryover of 150G awaits. Link below:

I didn't know about the Nika incident other than seeing that a horse ran off and delayed a race. Sorry to hear about this. :(

These were both freak accidents. I have seen several horses over the past few years get loose on the inner and try to jump the fence to the outer or jump the fence by the shoot. I have also seen how fast the outriders collar these horses in, looks like this one got away from them.
