I think there are a number of tracks that have built stakes programs around these races.

Horrible news, I guess its just par for the course in the current economic climate. Calder eliminated three graded stakes today as well including the first Derby of the year, the Tropical Park Derby.

They are returning the entry fees to 3% that would be an increase correct?

Are these the win and your in races?

Geez its seems that its me--As soon as I fall in love with the game its dyin'

Be it on Poly or whatever---I had such fun on and leading up to the Breeders Cup----And that is a lot for a newly handicapped person to say-------

What I am saying is this baby horse racing did something wonderful in my newly terribly limited and more painful life-----Its killing me to think that in a couple of years I will be sitting in my wheel chair staring at the wall again---

Man--I hate reading The news--------someone cheeR me up-----damn:bang:

Are these the win and your in races?Since the article states they are killing the entire BC Stakes program for 2009, then yes, the win and you're in races must also be history. Unless I'm reading things wrong...

This turn of events does not seem very good at first glance...

The win and you're in races - you can see the schedule here - : http://www.breederscup.com/challenge.aspx#schedule, (http://www.breederscup.com/challenge.aspx#schedule)
are in most cases not races where the BC adds supplemental money to the purse. For example, the $600,000 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland has no BC money involved.

Thanks for pointing this out...reminds me to google something the next time I'm not 100% sure and save myself from looking like the idiot.

The BC website has the 08 schedule, but not 09. BC press release says they are eliminating the supplements only. I wonder if this has anything to do with the changes to Saratoga's stakes schedule (which I thought were appropriate anyway).

Whatever the case, they would be stupid to not continue the promotion of races as prep races that are BC-branded. It increases awareness at the local tracks if done properly.

Good point. Like baseball building to the World Series or football to the Super Bowl.

Seems like the people providing the funding for the BC aren't happy either.

And he/they shouldn't be happy. Mr. Whiteley makes some excellent points and I'm glad he ends his commentary by taking a financial stand against BC.

It sounds like Whiteley might now understand what it's like to be a horseplayer these days. Paying through the nose and being treated like you don't matter....sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Hey, a little "about face". Good. Proves what I've been saying all along. The squeaky wheel gets the grease! :)

It was just an all around dumb move. People pay those fees because they know even if the chance of getting into a BC day race is remote, the bonuses for BC sponsored races for registered horses are a big deal and they are much more likely to be able to be involved in those. "Breeders" is part of the name of the organization. Guess they forgot that for a bit.

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/48462/breeders-cup-reverses-will-fund-stakesThis might be a more frightening turn of events than the original....all I can say is HUH?

Who is running that ship?

Now the real story unfolds. BC lost a bunch of their "reserves" in the market.
