I wouldn't be betting on those rankings yet! Maryland is like 6-2 with wins over Michigan and Michigan St and losses to very good Gonzaga and Georgetown, yet they are below such perennial powerhouses such as Jacksonville State, Niagara, Austin Peay and STONY BROOK?

North Carolina should be ranked 1-10. Barring injuries they are one of the great teams in college history.

Best teams that I've watched so far this season are NC and Gonzaga.

Some teams are undervalued on this chart!

Albany ELEVEN points over Siena......hogwash!
Siena played a "fair" game this past Saturday and handily defeated Albany for the fourth straight year.

These are Elo chess ratings. According to the theory, about 30 games are required for a "true" rating to emerge.

In the meantime, it's fun to see how well they work (or don't). :D

I thought about using last year's end of season ratings to begin the year, but that method fails to take into account the effectiveness of off-season recruiting.

So in this method, every team starts witn a rating of 1000.

The big problem with this method is what I call the "Ball State" problem. That's where a weak team has a great record against other weak teams.

The flipside is a strong team that plays a strong schedule and does well, but doesn't win all their games. They may have a rating that is lower than a Ball State team, but be much better than Ball State..

Since all teams start with 1000, a team that wins a lot of games sees their ratings go up -- even a weak team. Then when the weak team with the good rating plays a strong team with a lower rating, the stronger team will win, even though they have a lower rating.

And even after the game, the stronger team may have a lower rating than the weak team they just beat -- like Buffalo.

I didn't see the Ball St / Buffalo game. Maybe Ball St just had a bad game?

My point is, until these teams get to around 15 or 20 games, these ratings are suspect. However, you might find a couple of gems that haven't been discovered by the public yet. It happens every week. If you see a team on the list with about a 20 point advantage and is the underdog, it may be a good bet.

Look out for Michigan. They beat two top-5 teams early on this season (UCLA on a neutral floor, Duke at home), and could be rounding into form.

BS had 4 turnovers, two gave Buffalo immediate scores. BS QB lost focus, was sulking on the sideline and basically gave up. I'm sure that a lot of pro scouts will be looking elsewhere for QB talent after seeing that performance. At the same time, Buffalo performed well. Turner Gill has worked wonders with that program.

Sounds like BS quarterback had the same reaction as Belicheck to losing a perfect season.

Champions overcome adversity. I always liked Elway because he never gave up.

Quite possibly the toughest QB in my time.

North Carolina -didn't think much of Hansborough with my first impressions.
I really have to give him a second chance and see how he has developed.

I see him play often- quite the gutty, intense player. I am a UM fan so I don't much care for UNC and their (much like the Dukies) arrogant fans but I have to admit that Hansborough is quite a player. I believe he will be the #1 NBA pick.

As far as being developed, he was ready IMO for the NBA last year.

Beyond the top 15 -20 they are truly laughable

It takes about 15 or 20 games until the system starts to really work -- 30 games is even better.

Last year the system correctly picked Kansas.

What is surprising to me is that it does a pretty good job of picking the top teams even after only 10 games.

They sure are laughable!!!!
"Albany, N.Y." 30 points OVER Siena. Siena beat them for the fourth time and year in a row a couple of weeks ago.

Proving that I have way too much free time on my hands, I decided to look at "Oakwood University" which is rated 10 spots above the Univ. of Maryland in the ratings:

U of Md. 8 wins vs. 2 losses; points rating 1000.6
The losses were against Georgetown and Gonzaga - 2 pretty fair teams; both have been in and out of the top 10 this year.
2 of the 8 wins came against Michigan and Michigan State.

Oakwood Univ. has a record of 9 wins vs. 6 losses; points rating 1003.8

Oakwood has lost to the following college powerhouses:
Martin Methodist twice- Concordia College & Belhaven College. They are however on a roll recently with consecutive wins against Tennessee Temple and Southeast Bible College. That must be the reason for being rated above UM.

What was I thinking?

I used the Dec 21st ratings and applied them to all the Dec 22nd games. You can verify this for yourself below and by checking my post of the Dec 21st ratings.

The ratings picked the winners in 60 out of 76 Monday night games for a 60-16 record.

That ain't to bad for doing zero handicapping.

The ratings work best when the two teams are playing within their own conferences. I admit there are cases where a small school will have a great rating and a big college will have a bad rating. The small college will probably lose. However, if that small college with a high rating is playing against another small college, I'll bet the higher rated team every time.

I stand by the usefulness of these ratings. How else could you sit and handicap 76 games in one night without some sort of computer doing a lot of the work?

These ratings are not really meant to rank every team in the country in order. They're meant to tell you who is the better team when the schools are in the same division so that you can bet on the better team.

If a small school is playing a large school, then you need to use a little common sense. But even without using common sense and betting blindly, you would have done OK Monday night. This is pretty typical of my experiences last year.

By the way, I tallied these manually. So if you see an error please let me know.

I misunderstood the purpose of your rankings- makes sense now.

These ratings are not really meant to rank every team in the country in order. They're meant to tell you who is the better team when the schools are in the same division so that you can bet on the better team.

How many points better? The true way to bet is to attempt to make a better line on the game. Can you do this with your numbers with teams from the same division? If you have NC ranked better than Duke are you laying 8 points?

There is a probably a way to generate a line, but I don't bet the spreads. I only bet straight up with an oddsline. Check out the Matchbook.com website. They have point spreads or outright winner bets.

So I might bet NC to win at .6-1 or better. I only bet the higher ranked team to win and I look at the odds. My favorite bet is when I have a team ranked higher, yet they are the underdog. Another bet I like is when the higher ranked team is greater than even money.
