I agree. Toulouse Lautrec will be no slouch either...

I liked Toulouse a little better and still do. Luckily I just boxed the two of them :). One of many very competitive races on that card today

Opening 1/4 mile was a bit slow, but other than that....a very powerful performance.

Race 10 at Gulfstream today. I was looking forward to this ones next start. It looks there are 1 or 2 in there that might be decent, so will see what happens second time out. I think he is good. Much than some of the others I might have mentioned.

He actually ran a real good race, the winner ran big for McPeek off the layoff.

McPeek is loaded. Theregoesgojo won the last and was a scratch on thursday when McPeek took both 1 1/8 allowance races.
TG I finally paid attention and caught the late DD. getting out for the day.
What I have been noticing at Gulfstream is that the exactas which should pay big are coming back less than great. It started me thinking about those large bettors and the computer generated bets tied in to the tote system . Wondering if it isn't wiser to bet Tampa, FG or elsewhere where the pools are smaller and the payoffs come back better.

I must disagree with you guys. Theregoesgojo sat an absolute perfect trip. For me, he's a bet against next out.

i was excited about that well bred turf miler coming off a game 2nd or 3rd at Keeneland who was running the 8.5 turf maiden for Mclaughlin
and Quality road
neither looked like future graded stakes runners.
lot of prices on the board today for Gulfstream.
Expansion and Kiss The Kid were nice payoffs. It was a winnable day.

For what it's worth I thought Quality Road ran an outstanding race today. Many were probably expecting him to come out and run off the screen but you had to almost positive he was going to regress off the monster debut.
He broke slowly, rushed up, took the lead, set very fast fractions and was beaten only by an absolutely perfect trip winner from a hot barn. Theregoesjojo will almost certainly be overbet next out in the Hutcheson or wherever else he surfaces. Those of you who are Quality Road fans should not despair.

What will they do at two turns though ? and is Quality Road a one dimensional speed ball or can he rate off other speed if he draws outside ? I'm not going gaga over Jojo, the other Mcpeek from thursday that Albarado road is McPeeks better horse to me as he rates well, but has tactical speed and went 1 1/8.

I agree about Quality Road. The time of the race was fast, he did not run bad, in fact he did run solid in defeat. It was his first start off the layoff, and I feel he can move forward off this for sure. It's a long spring. As for the two turns and rating...those are things nobody really knows yet totally.

quality road is not a derby horse

I think it is easy to lose sight of the fact that young horses have to develop and be brought along, and be taught how to run. The ride Garcia gave QR was mediocre at best, with no thought on how to ride once the gate opened. QR strikes me as a big goofy adolescent who has to be brought along with all the experience of a seasoned journeyman. His choice to rush him off his feet after his slow start was the worst thing he could have done, and ultimetely will be the wrong thing the horse remembers next time he runs. I for one hope to see a rider change.

You won't see the LittleGuy post under this thread...yet...
Actually he did say he liked him after his maiden win, but I have to take a dig...how many does he take? lol
Horse put together the best race of any 3 year old in the nation yet...
Old Fashioned has some company...

How about that Pamplemousse on cruise control . When the interviewer asked Canani , " but can he rate ? " he replies, " who cares ?"

If you liked him so much today, how come you only brought this thread back after the race?
Or, do we get credit for being right anytime a horse we once liked wins?

I'll give you $5 bucks to buy back that last post, because I thought it was worthless...sounds like I deal if you ask me
The once liked thing is a little ridiculous I think to...I will leave it at that...
Unless you want to keep going, that is...

FoY cemented one thing in my head for sure and has nothing to do with Quality Road. Beethoven can hit the board at any distance. He isn't going to win very often, but he MUST be used underneath on tris and supers. Had I any doubts about this before (and I really didn't) I have none now. Leave him off Derby verticals at your own risk.

A couple other thoughts
Who saw the 10th at GP? Now that was a closing kick. He's nominated btw. Wonder if the fever is going to catch.
What was the real opening fraction of the FoY? I can't believe they ran the second quarter in 21 and change.

He was washed out and sore yesterday put a fork in him unless they correct whats bothering him....Quality Road looked like the real deal with a stride that will run all day so from fla its all about Dunkirk and Quality Road from a on the scene report.

The top 2 from a January 10 NW1X finish far in front of the rest of the pack.....just shows how weak the Hutcheson and Holy Bull were.
I wonder how Obligingly would've run yesterday. He was 3rd in the Jan 10 NW1X after breaking his maiden with a triple digit Beyer figure, like Quality Road.

Just watched the Sham and The Pamplemousse looked great on the front end...I would love it if they would run him on the dirt before the Derby. Took them all the way on the front end and ran away from them. Strong effort. This group is really starting to get exciting. Old Fashioned, nothing will be handed to him.
We saw 2 blockbuster efforts yesterday

One of the things that made it so likely Quality Road was going to improve over time was that James Jerkens rarely has his first time starters totally wound up 100%. He was obviously very good as a FTS, so how could you not like him.
I didn't play him yesterday even though I thought he was a mortal lock to improve over his first and second start (first time lasix, a spectacular work coming in, and a few other things). I thought it was a tough spot given the amount of high quality speed in the race he was likely to have to contend with and then hold off some other decent horses. It's unfortunate, because I won't get another chance to play him at that price any time soon.

First time lasix is something people tend to overlook these days, mostly because nearly all horses in this country run with it from start #1. I think it has gained back some value it had lost a few decades ago.

Thanks Tom. I ran into the same source on Bloodhorse. Not a great explanation, but it seems to be the truth. I know they backed that chute up as far as they could and it actually crosses the county line, so they had to do some legal tapdancing when they built it. That strip is just very very fast, otherwise imagine if they did have a runup like at Belmont, say, they would be popping 43 and change to the half. Horses doing 6f shouldn't hold after something like that, let alone going 1m on a regular strip. As I said though, I'm not sold on Quality Road just yet. Looks like he's coming to the Wood, and if he can repeat the effort there, then I'll have to give in to him, but not yet. I still say the only thing I really learned from that race is that Beethoven is a board hitter that must be used underneath. Especially given the fact that they are saying he was very washed out and upset before the race and still able to close in and pick up the pieces. Very Tiagoish, which is good for the tri and super

More Monarchos like . Could be very wrong , but I am watching what Ward does with him. I remember how Monarchos ran in the Wood I believe making a looping move on the turn and coming up a little short in that one. While I'm not in love with Beethoven, I haven't given up on him just yet.

Another good example, I was trying to think of a recent one. My favorite in the category was Dynever who could finish 2nd at any distance.
