View Full Version : Obama Postpones Promise of Relief to the Poor through Tax Increases to the Rich

Gessh...just when I was gettin' all geared up to paying higher taxes -- just when I was wrappin' my brain around the profound wisdom of the Robin Hood Mentality of taxing the Rich and giving the spoils thereof to the Poor -- just when I was getting ready to pound my chest and boast of my great Patriotism -- this bomb was dropped on me this morning:

WASHINGTON – An economic crisis, rising joblessness and a credit squeeze can make a president-elect refine his words. Today's word is "repeal." During his presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised to repeal President George W. Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy ahead of their scheduled expiration in 2011.

It was part of how Obama would pay for an overall net tax cut aimed at low- and middle-income taxpayers, and an effort to bring what he called "fairness" to the tax system.

No one is talking tax hikes now.

Over the weekend, Obama said he has charged his new economic team with devising a plan that would create or preserve 2.5 million jobs over two years. He said the plan would include broad spending plans as well as the middle- and low-income tax cuts he described during the campaign.

Aides later said the plan would not include any of the tax increases Obama, as a candidate, had said he would impose on taxpayers who make more than $250,000.

I like the choice of words in the first paragraph -- "can make a president-elect refine his words." Refine!? The airhead who wrote this piece didn't even have the good sense to way "refine his plan". But I digress...

I have to think this err.."refinement of words" isn't going to sit well with the far left either.

For the rest of the story:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/fact_check_obama_taxes

This news is really going to ruin my Thanksgiving. I was so looking forward to thanking Obama for his compassion for the Poor and his wisdom in socking it to the Rich.

how many times did we hear about the Bush tax cuts that benefitted the rich. over and over. all the people that believed that hogwash and voted for this fraud, let's hear from you now. you were duped, you drank the soak-the-rich kool-aid. you were like Charlie Brown attempting to kick the football with Lucy holding and believeing that this time she wouldn't pull the ball away. sorry.

it proves that his idea to repeal the Bush tax cuts would be detrimental to the economy, which is what we all said right along.

I think you'll have a centrist president. During the campaign I was wondering how a guy could possibly think of raising taxes in a downturn a la Hoover, unless he was a wacko. This proves Obama is no wacko.

simply , some , most maybe never get it...
any gvt moves , stupid as they are must always be counter cyclical.
i wouldn't think i would need to lay that out on this board of all places.

It warms my heart to hear such concern of the right on this board for the feelings of the middle and the left. Proof Obama truly has brought this country together.

I know the left kept insisiting throughout: "Obamas a socialist, Obamas a socialist, yay!"...but the right saw things better, you kept trying to warn them "He's a moderate, he's a moderate!", but alas, they would not listen.

They will have a hard time dealing with apparently being so wrong, but I feel it is very good of you guys to try to help them with that.

Let the healing begin, I say.

the healing won't begin until people understand how they were duped. why they were lied to. they were told as recently as a month ago about the bad bad Bush tax cuts for the wealthy that would be repealed immediately. now we're told that we need to keep them in place. you call that being a moderate? At best I call it deception in order to get elected, at worst it was just plain ignorance.

healing? That's a laugh. If he signs FOCA and all the catholic hospitals close........ you are going to be in for some "lack of healing" that's for sure.

The Catholic Bishops I don't think are screwing around. This could get interesting.

Taxes will be a babyshit issue if 20% of the Hospitals (mostly in lower end neighborhoods) in the country close down.

Well, you are correct, but do you and others on here realize what entity pays for unemployment when people are layed off?

If so , do you realize that as the rate of that goes up that most STATES have to keep in balance , so the taxes have to go up on employers as the unemployed rates rise.

Now, we could get rid of unemployment benefits or just have Uncle Sammy send your and my future borrowed money to the states with the highest rates to bail their budgets out or maybe bama will wise up and tax the Catholic church ,or maybe someone will be paying taxes in the future on benefits we take today?

Well, which do y'all choose?

hey, is this not a great country or what? A nation full of crack pots on all sides, and yet we get to drive the worldwide bus (even if we do drive it into the ditch once in awhile). Just imagine how f'ed up all the other countries must be to go along with barely a grumble.

This weekend, and maybe the next, and a year from now, I predict I'll be out at Point Reyes (at Tony's, maybe), eating plates of barbequed oysters and Crab Louie's as big as my head, sipping on an Anchor Steam, looking out at Tomales Bay, with my girl next to me, thinking how great life is. And that goes for whatever Obama decides to do between now and then.

Row row row your boat
gently down the stream
Merrily Merrily Merrily Merrily
Life is but a dream

Happy Thanksgiving

Surely you jest! The guy is a crackpot/head and as clueless as they come. This is the whackjob who believes that he can get the economy to "bubble up" from the bottom! (From the bottom! Do you understand what this means?) Yeah, he has changed course alright -- but that wasn't his doing. Someone probably caught him in a straight moment and explained the economic facts of life to him. Many of us on this forum ridiculed his stupid, hair-brained tax-the-rich scheme months ago. How nice of the President Elect to finally catch the train and climb aboard. If he's this slow on the uptake with such an obvious, no-brainer issue, what's going to happen when he faces tougher challenges?

I don’t know; maybe it was just the fact that he spoke in complete sentences and looked people in the eye that caught me off-guard; but I found him far more impressive then I ever dreamed the last two days.

I admit; I set the bar very low as I didn’t vote for the either offending party, but just to hear a man talk with clarity and not hanging your head in embarrassment was a welcome change.

Then we have the outgoing "DECIDER"----the most important decisions being made on the basis of one man's "gut," a gut that proved so wrong so often. GWB's contempt for evidence, scorn for intellect and 'book learnin', and the relentless war on science itself is finally coming to an end. The outgoing administration is mind-boggling, a parade of incompetence, malice and dishonesty. Obama may be a rookie but I don't beleive he will be playing dress-up in flight suits, strutting and posing and showing his desperate insecurity as a driver of American foreign policy. No more giggles and shoulder shakes, and nicknames and talking to us like we're a nation of fourth-graders.

Which proves exactly why our country has gone off the deep end in electing this guy. We no longer have any decent choices on either side. Clinton was not well known either............ nor was GWBush...........this has been going on for a long time.

PLEASE....ya I thought so...

he's changing course only weeks after the election before even taking office?
and he's changing course on a populist theme (soak the rich) that was crucial to getting him elected.

let me spell it out for you, he knew that if elected he wasn't going to repeal those tax cuts immediately, even though he said it over and over.

I'm fine with it, but people that voted for all this hope and change should feel duped. it's nothing but Clinton retreads and most of the Bush policies.

Yeah, keep us posted, will ya? I mean...here's Obama abandoning the Poor in their darkest hour -- during their deepest need. They won't be getting any bailout money, nor will they be receiving any welfare payments (disguised as tax rebates, tax refunds, etc.). So, it seems to me that, with Obama finally seeing the light, he's admitting that the Poor can only be helped in the Good Times. But during the Bad Times, they just have to suck it up. Socialism is great, isn't it!?

again, let me repeat because you don't seem to be listening. YOU people were duped because you believed what he said just a few weeks ago. that doesn't make him smarter, it makes him a fraud. thats all. its makes him smarter than the people who voted for him which isn't saying a lot. you all voted for a guy that just figured out that a tax increase right now would be horrible.

if you people didn't care about the Bush tax cuts for the rich, why not vote for Bush, or McCain. McCain was honest and said that he wouldn't repeal the tax cuts.

I just love to see all the back-tracking thats going on. all of the evil policies of the largely despised Bushitler administration, ARE REMAINING IN PLACE! And this is the change we've been waiting for?:D
