Do they test for this in most tracks in North America?
For those who don't know, it is the main ingredient in Viagra.
"Professional sports players have been using drugs such as Viagra thinking that the opening of their blood vessels will enrich their muscles, therefore enhancing their performance"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viagra

I noticed cases where the drug was seized:
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/HorseRacing/2006/04/25/1549477-sun.html

I also found that recently there was a suspension in Iowa (Prairie Meadows):
http://grg51.typepad.com/steroid_nation/2008/08/prairie-meadows.html

and in Macau, a trainer was given a harsh sentence (the way it should be) after two horses tested positive for sildenafil:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/other_sports/horse_racing/3067575.stm

The reason I'm bringing this up is that I'm pretty convinced that there are some popular undetectable drugs being used right now. Not only do they enhance the performance of horses, I think the enhancement doesn't last long and these types of drugs have a very negative affect on horses long term (much like EPO, DPO).

Viagara is tested for in New York State at both the thoroughbred and the harness tracks. There were some sildenifil (viagara) positives in the early 2000's that were prosecuted in N.Y.

I'm suspicious of the drug because in Ontario the only thing I found was that it showed up in a drug bust. And the person busted was definitely supplying to horsemen.
Where are all the positives?

Commonly referred to as an upper.

Wouldn't that induce excessive drag on a horse ?

Where are all the positives? My guess is that a lot of tracks don’t test for a lot of things. I recall reading a thing about the Preakness where they said that they tested for about twice as much stuff as they normally would. That pretty much says it all.

Not if you wanted the lower 40 acres plowed.

In the two times that I've tried Viagara, I got a vicious headache both times. Heart rate increased. Got flush. That was enough.

Wouldn't horses incur side effects as well? You know, horses CAN and DO get headaches. And a drug wouldn't be the only cause.

It may be hard on the horses, but it sure does lead to some stiff competition.

A filly should be entered in the race as a rabbit . :)

It would be interesting to see how many tests all the tracks do. I imagine it would vary quite a bit in number. Some probably do very few.

An erection lasting more than 4 hours is a painful experience. However, my nurses weren't complaining.

:D
"with erections lasting more than 4 hours, call a professional!"

i get a kick out of the commercial "ask your doctor if you are healthy enough for sex"
- that's like asking if you are healthy enough to go for a jog, and not mentioning the pot of coffee you plan on drinking first.... :faint:

When I saw this thread title, I figured Sildenafil Citrate was the name of a horse.

okay, you boys are killing me (LOL)! ;)

As Joe Palmer wrote in This Was Racing:
"..back in those days, when they said a horse was stiff, he WAS stiff.."

(ahem..he was referring to alcohol.)

Okay, it's a couple of years old, but the link is from Sports Illustrated and it's on topic !!

I love this line from the story...."It is not clear how Viagra affected the horses' speed."

Oh yeah, and because DiFlorio was not licensed with the ORC, he had to turn over his drugs and was fined a whopping $600, and then was a free man.
[snip]

That’s the real problem, the industry actually encourages cheating. How else to explain these very soft slaps on the wrist and farcical trainer suspensions?

It is about drugs at Turf Paradise. Apparently they do $38 worth of testing after every race, but the owner now seems to be taking a hardline approach against cheaters:
