Maybe I just started to notice - but even at the so-called Bigger Tracks ..
Lots of $8,000 and below claiming races ! :bang: We are talking about theee
lowest level allowed :jump:
One would presume that these animals would not retain their form very
well .. and may have more injuries, problems etc. Your thoughts ?

The lower level horses may be running to become eligible for some of the starter handicaps. There were a few that ran this summer at Monmouth for 10k tags to be in the Malouf starter series. The purse for the starter series was 35k. One of the races a 5k claimer won it.

Beleive I've seen $3200 claiming races at Turf Paradise . Also beleive when Aqueduct moves to the inner track in the winter they have $5000 claiming races but not 100% sure . Others here know I'm sure .

Beulah has been running $2,500 claimers recently. I haven't seen races that cheap since CT pre slots days.

In Louisiana, $5000 is lowest claiming level at Fair Grounds and Louisiana Downs. Delta Downs and Evangeline card races as low as $4000.

Los Alamitos has T'Bred claiming tags of:
$5,000, $3,200, $2,500, & $2,000 for "The Bottom"...
I don't see the problem with writing races even lower,
if the same crowd @ The Bottom keeps getting smoked for $2K...
I'm sure many trainers there would enter perpetual 'also-rans'
for a $1,500 or $1,250 tag for the chance to win a race!

Yep, could have "The WalMart Claiming Series"....watch for falling prices!

On a somewhat related note....I seem to recall that Mountaineer (I think it was them), had a performance type rule....the horse had to have had a top 3? placing in its last x starts.

Is it Mountaineer? What is the criteria? Are there other tracks that do this? Thanks!

I don't see the correlation between low claiming prices and more injuries. Just because horses run in lower classes doesn't mean they are not physically sound. Someone with a database could probably come up with an injuries per class ratio.

Turf Paradise has a neat "Beaten Claimers" condition, where to be eligible your horse could NOT have run 1-2-3 during the current TuP meet..makes for tough 'capping sometimes!

I would venture to guess that there are several $2500 claimers that have been around the block and know how to win races who could beat some overpriced yearlings who can't, e.g. The Green Monkey.

The big thing is that horses run for 2500, 3200, and 4000 and don't get claimed.
What does that tell you about the value of these horses?
Astute owners know it costs just as much to feed and train a 2500 horse as it does a 25000 horse.
I also think that when you look at sales prices at events like the Keeneland sales, like the stock market, horse prices are coming down.

If horses ran for what they are worth, we'd see a lot more 10,000 claiming races or less than we do, and we'd see a lot more claiming going on.

Bob: Nice job of explaining the low level claiming ranks at Turf Paradise, which of course are the same horses that I see during the summers at Yavapai. But in the lower claiming ranks, ESPECIALLY in the condition of horses that have not finished 1-2-or 3 at the current meet, these races often draw full fields and with several being "easy" throwouts (relatively speaking;) ) I recommend folks take a good look at them. I have found some excellent wagering opportunities with horses who at 1st glance appear to have dismal form but are dropping down into these races from let's say an open $3200 claimer (a much tougher race) and everyone else in the field has been knocking heads at this level. By the way, for those of you that might not be familiar with this condition in the DRF, it is designated by clm3000R (make sure you know what restriction that might be at a different track's conditions, as the restriction somewere else can be entirely different, but as it applies to Turf Paradise) it designates this particular 1-2-3 condition..............

The only U.S. tracks that I know of with over $250k handle per day which run sub-$4,000 claimers are Beulah, Los Alamitos and Turf Paradise. The Northern California fair tracks card some cheap claimers.

Some of the mid-sized Canadian tracks (i.e. LBG, ASD), do the cheaper claimers, and once in a great while, Fort Erie will card one.

Of course, the small tracks (i.e. FP, PM) run them regularly, but that's to be expected.

Los Alamitos seldom runs anything BUT $2,500 thoroughbred claimers (almost always at 4 1/2 furlongs) for thoroughbreds.

Penn National used to run $2,500 claimers regularly, but they haven't recently.

Turf Paradise

Folks betting this track with these rakes of TWENTY PERCENT win/place/show??

Hawthorne has all the cheap claimers you want at a 15% rake.:ThmbUp: Their exacta rake is a full 2.5 points lower than Tup win rake.

I am really not interested in supporting venues where the state, its lawmakers and track execs are raping bettors.:ThmbDown::ThmbDown::ThmbDown:

Pretty sure that Los Al is only allowed to run bottom-level TB's, and can't go over a certain distance. Someone on here can probably clarify this even more...

Lets see, at a 2,500 claiming price, the owner would get

$1,500 and the the trainer 150.00.

In a medium size field(ie 7 horses), if I'm the fav at 3-5, why push the
horse to win(who is pobably worth 500.00) when I can dance around the
exotics and make a hell of alot more $$(especially the trainer)

And then come back another day/month and win at bigger odds.

While this stuation can happen at any track in the U.S. I seriously doubt there is much scrutiny at the smaller tracks..
