Tampa Bay Downs opens on Saturday, December 13. The stable area opened last week on November 13.

I'm aware of some changes in the betting platform: They will have rolling doubles with 18% takeout (among the lowest in the game for DD's); a reduced takeout of 20% on the P6; and, two Super Hi-5 bets @ 20% takeout with carryovers.

ADW approval hinges on the local HBPA board meeting later this month.

This will be my sixth year to follow this meet (it all started with "Tampa on Tuesdays" at this board!). Each meet has seen better horses, bigger pools and lower takeouts. Tampa has one of the nicest turf courses in the country.

Bay downs is my home track i only live around 20 min from there IMO one of the best tracks going during the winter, even better racing than Gulfstream. Bigger fields also.

I hope the Calder horsemen do not pressure the Tampa horsemen to hold out on the ADW front.

That's a concern for sure.

I'm planning to be there for 3 weeks this year, but I hope that I can play the rest of the meet with PTC, etc.

Me too Richard. One of my favorite meets of the year. I went down last year for a week but don't think I will make it this year. Hope to be playing most days via internet.

I shopped around for a while deciding what meet to throw myself into this winter because I have been following the dismal Ohio circuit during the winter(Beulah). The THG dispute in the state about ADW's made it an impossibility because I was sick of going down to the track to bet simulcast races in other parts of the state.

My big beef was lack of form.Form holds up better in temperate weather.Plus TB is a long meet.Once the race notes start piling up,good bets become routine. This might be one of the best decisions I ever made.I might not bet Ohio/NKY races ever again during the winter. Can't wait!!

And oddly this was a quirky decision because I grew up in Tampa when I was really young and I just wanted to find a warm weather track.Louisiana was my 2nd choice.Little did I know all the peripheral benefits this track has.

I have great expectations for this meet!

Excellent thoughts all around. In addition, Tampa has one of the best racing secretaries around in Allison Deluca. She's been there about 3 years, and the quality of racing has gone up dramatically since her arrival.

I can't imagine the horseman would split, and that should make Tampa another off the board track.

Hopefully Tracknet can come to an agreement with the horsemen at today's meeting and some sanity can start to return on the signals. Couto of the TOC also was quoted as saying Youbet is ready to deal. We should know more later today.

Great track often with large fields, looking forward to the opening.

I know alot of trainers were ticked at her last yr for carding too many 5 furlong turf races. But personally i think she did a very good job, nice full fields. You knoe trainers if there not whining there not happy.

Does anyone know if Tampa is being televised by either TVG or HRTV?

Last year they were on both, but always as a filler, not always live.

Richard Grunder. He's not exactly Fund & Wagnells when it comes to pronunciations either.

I assume Tampa downs is a dirt track If you all like playing there. Is it a deep coupe track that favors closers, How do front runners do there ? I remember the track as horses making big sweeping moves on the far turn at all distances

anyone got more to add.Please

:) :) :)

I thought Tampa played fair last year. A few years ago, the inside could get bad, but that hasn't been prevalent the last year or two. Speed does fine.

The only consistent bias I saw at TAM last season was in dirt routes. The rail on the first turn was consistently deeper almost all season long. If you were on the rail during that first turn, it was bad news.

Tamps Russ, thanks for he route angle. maybe that is why I vision wide sweeping moves on both turns.

I looked at last years top leaders. Trainer Jamie Ness stats are hard to believe. 199 starts / 68 wins Jockey Daniel Centeno 555 rides / 144 wins.
I hear Centeno may not ride at Tampa this year.

Good info guys.

That'd be a pity. Was looking forward to the Centeno/Lezcano duels.

Lezcano rode at Gulfstream quite a bit last year. I wouldn't expect to see him at Tampa (other than big days or on GP shippers) much at all this year.

I just checked Monmouth top leaders, Lezcano was leading rider.Centeno finish 6th and only won around 9% of his races. Won only 63 races but he did earn over 2 million in purses . Last year at Tampa Centeno won 144 races and earned 2 million in purses. I think he will be back. It's like being a big fish in a small pond.

All,
I was introduced to Daniel Centeno in a restaurant last season in Tampa! He is focused, has a winning attiude and appears to be a professional rider in every aspect of the game! There has been some question as to whether he will be here this meet at Tampa or at another Florida track!
Maxspa
p.s. My opinion is that Tampa Downs is a trainers track. When the trainers says go that's when the horses really try!

Pay attention to what Maxspa says, He lives all year round in Tampa and goes to the races every day. Max, knows trainers and jockeys. Has Coffee with them in the morning and dines with them in the evening. Maxspa is a very knowledgeable gentleman.

With the Florida steriod ban set to into effect on Jan 1, 2009, it will be interesting to see if previous trainer successes will still prevail. I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out.

I am contemplating heading down for the Tampa Bay Derby since I have never visited that track before and I always try to hit a few new tracks each year. I am curious if anyone has previously been to Tampa Bay Downs on that day and whether that would be a good weekend to aim for to attend the races or if the track is too crowded with too many lines that day such thats its not worth the effort.

the place will be packed. the track is small to begin with, but it is a great place to be on any day.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated. Would it be a safe assumption that if I have a table up in the dining room that the crowd factor will be at least partially mitigated and less cramped?

for sure, but if you go to the window's their will be big lines. maybe you should bring your phone or laptop.

Thanks, I did notice from their website that they have Wi-Fi access so I would almost definitely be bringing my laptop. I really like it when wireless is available at a track (not too many have it), at the Million last year our whole table was humming along on our respective laptops (incidentially the Million in the Million room is a great experience that I would highly recommend to anyone thinking of visiting Arlington Park).

Yeah, I went last year.. I got there early and found a grandstand seat and didnot have any problems beting until a couple of races before the big race. Its a nice track and nice people. A freshening from the gulfstream experience.
