I was wondering if anyone has data on total US handle from a year to year basis.
Just to see exactly how horse racing is really doing as far as growth is concerned.

Here's some data. We can assume 2008 will show a sharp dip.

Thanks very much. It just shows how pathetic the horse racing industry is.
More and more people have computers, the Breeders Cup has grown, everyone with a pulse can bet (except of course may not have full choice of what to bet on, oh, and there is also Arizona), yet racing handle stagnates, and growth is dead.

You have to use the ol compouding factor when looking at those. 1.03 to the power of 10 I believe for 3% inflation. If we grew at inflation since 1998, which is pathetic in the internet age, but nonetheless, we'd be around 19B this year (instead we'll be at about 14B, which is a big % drop). With the internet and billions from slots feeding racing that is pretty pathetic, imo.

Anyone know where statistical trends in pari-mutuel handle for other countries can be found?

Would be very interesting to see numbers for Japan, UK, France, Australia, etc.

The Thoroughbred Almanac carries handle info broken down by track.
