Well, well...here is why Bobby F didn't loose too much sleep selling Vineyard Haven:

Can't blame him...and now he has plenty of 'spare cash' to go buy himself another Derby hopeful!!
More power to him!!!
I'm really going to miss VH and Midshipman being here and being trained here.

i don't think he could win the kentucky derby that way if he had the top 10 prospects. because once the best one beats the brains out of the other 9 he has no more competition. in the united states the whole triple crown deal is predicated on top competion from all over this big country. this guy is going to have the only 3 yo competitors all in one race!

I assume you're talking about Sheik Mo... you might be right about that...I beleive it says in the story that he's wondering how he'll keep these colts seperated...although to me, what difference does it make...I mean, so run them in the same races...and find out which is best.
This crap about trainers/owners wanting to keep certain horses from facing each other is chicken s***!!!
I also can't see a horse training over there until, say, a week before the Derby, then coming here and winning the thing.
Vineyard Haven is sure a nice colt, but not sure about his pedigree, which really isn't all that great...now Midshipman is another story, and if I was the Sheik, I'd send that one back to Baffert in time to get his Derby preps.

anything is possible, but lots of times improbable. i know first hand how funnycyde got better stepping up to the competion. every race got tougher and tougher. if you remember he ran 4th against a great horse empire maker, and then won the derby and preakness off that one great wood memorial. the sheik doesn't have that luxury going for him in dubai. you need competion to win the big 3 year old races, or any other race for that matter.

lamboguy....I agree... and wonder what his plans really are...no doubt he has something in mind, and again, if he keeps these 2 colts in Dubia to train and race up to the Derby, how can he possibly keep them from facing each other in races...and they do need to face real competition to gain and/or maintain that fighting spirit that gets a race won...like Funny Cide, as your example.
But...I guess stranger things have happened....especially in the world of horse racing...like the trainer in 'Let it Ride' said..."Ya never know"!!!

its all about the level of competion.
if funnycyde didn't work in 58 the week of the belmont, we might be calling him a triple crowner.
barclay did a great job with the horse, he bought him back 3 times. that in itself is an almost impossible task.
i try to do the same thing as he does, but mine always takes big drops. the whole key to moving up is having a horse that doesn't miss a beat, eats up and doesn't get sick. try doing that its real tought. especially today with all the drugs the vets hit them with, i think their imune systems aren't as strong as they used to be.

I wonder how the economic downturn is going to affect the chances of somebody like Sheik Maktouhm winning the Derby?
I predict it gets easier in 2011............ and somebody comes up with a super horse that might just win the Triple Crown...............because of less competition?
Anybody think I am nuts?
now Midshipman is another story, and if I was the Sheik, I'd send that one back to Baffert in time to get his Derby preps.
But the main point of the article was that the Sheik wants do win via the environment he has created back home. I see no reason to think that he can not succeed.

Unless you are an oil sheikh you should always take the money. Frankel isn't stupid. Every year you have guys trying to buy a Derby winner along the trail - racing has gotten to that level which is kind of sad but it's all about the inflated value of stallion syndication. That's where the big money is if you get lucky. They did it with Curlin and others so it will keep happening from year to year.

True... and if that's the way he wants it, it might take longer than he thinks it should...IMO, you'd have to have one hell of a Derby horse to come here, say, a week before the Derby from Dubia and win it...and IMO, Midshipman looks mighty good to win the Derby...but I beleive he'd have a better shot if they bring him back here several weeks before the Derby and let Baffert woprk his magic.
And this has nothing to do with my opinion of the training facilites in Dubia...world class operation, or their training methods, or the Sheik, a class act guy!!

Did John Gosden design the facilities in Dubai? I think he had a big hand in it.
