Coleman lead over Franken shrinks yet again; only 221 vote difference

According to the web site for Minnesota's Secretary of State (http://electionresults.sos.state.mn.us/20081104/ElecRslts.asp?M=S&R=all&P=A&Races=%27%27), the difference between Republican Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken in the race for Senate has shrunk once again this Friday evening.

Earlier in the day it had been widely reported that "a clerical error" was responsible for eliminating 100 votes for Barack Obama and Al Franken, bringing the ballot count to a mere 238 vote difference, down from the initial 740 or so votes . It now appears that there has been some more discrepancies unveiled and the total amount of votes separating the two candidates for Senate is only 221.

Democratic-Farmer-Labor AL FRANKEN 1211335

First three paragraphs from a MN Star Tribune newspaper website article.

A tiny town in the Democratic stronghold of Minnesota's Iron Range emerged Friday as the latest battleground over the state's disputed U.S. Senate race.

Democrat Al Franken gained 100 votes there between election night and when results were officially tallied on Thursday.

Adding to the intrigue -- and suspicion in Sen. Norm Coleman's camp: The time stamp on the official tape printed out by a ballot machine in the precinct in question carried a date of Nov. 2, two days before the election

The Recount: Breaking News on Mountain Iron Precinct One
U.S. Senate recount

At 7:22 p.m. last night, the Secretary of State's Web site was updated (after working hours) to reflect an additional 100 voters.

The precinct reporting was Mountain Iron Precinct One.

Every one of those 100 votes was cast for U.S. Sen. Barack Obama...and DFL Senate candidate Al Franken.

Mountain Iron is in legislative District 5A.

In 2006, 5A voted 74.3% for U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and 22.6% for then-U.S. Rep. Mark Kennedy. In 2004, 5A voted 65.9% for U.S. Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) and 30.2% for President George W. Bush. In 2002, 5A voted 69.9% for Fritz Mondale and 26.4% for U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN). Add Your Message Here

100 to nothing! Sounds like they ordered it up.

I'll have a double bacon cheeseburger, curly fries, a large vanilla shake & 100 votes for Obama from two days before the election.

Comin' right up!

Conservatives are still in a state of shock. If Franken flips this you will see a level of political despair unmatched in modern times.

This gives the Democrats 58 Senate Seats if Franken pulls it out. While 58 is not Filibuster proof, extortion will flip two Republicans easy.

They are definitely moving the Johnson Space Center out of Texas and merging it with Kennedy in Florida. Good Bye high paying jobs, hello crashing home prices.

They are also going to downsize Military bases in Texas, Tennessee, and Wyoming and merge their functions into bases in Indiana, Ohio and North Carolina. Thereby shoring up Democratic holds on these recent flips.
.

I'm having so much fun it should be against the law.

I for one am shocked that anyone could vote for this baffoon. Seems like the only qualification to run for office now is face recognition. I heard a interesting comment supposedly from a democratic insider who said if his election gave the Dems 60 seats great - but other than that nobody really wants him in D.C. they think he will be an embarrashment.

32 absentee ballots from the city of Minneapolis showed up to be counted today ( saturday ) to be delivered to the state on Monday. They could not be delivered on Tuesday to the proper polling because they were closed.

They waited to deliver them to be counted until the normal business was wrapped up. The story is on the minneapolis star tribune website. State law requires a recount if the margin is less than one percent. Not sure what they are trying to do since the margin needs to be under 50,000 votes. I think the total vote count was close to 5 million ballots.

I assume they would be able to use some of the left over Obama donations to hire more lawyers to contest every vote. There appear to be 10's of thousands of ballots cast where they marked Obama for president but a vote on the same ballot do not show up for Senator. Now they will try to determine "voter intent" on the so called undercount ballots.

I'm tempted to agree with you. Congressman....maybe. Senator, not really.

He is a smart guy...no doubt about that. But he's Michael Moore on Weight Watchers with a better hair cut. A guy I like, a guy I agree with in many ways...But not a guy I want in the US Senate.

Strange things, but not unexpected, going on in this one.

So far, 100% of all votes needing typos corrected (????) have been in favor of Frankenstein. 50% of them in one district, and the rest on two others. 100%!!! More errors on this one single race in Minn. than ALL other offices statewide combined.

Now, they are finding ballots in people's cars!

A local professor did a statistical analysis of the findings on the radio today - it is a close to impossible as he has ever seen.

If you can't lick 'em, screw 'em.

You guys should not be shocked at voting patterns.
Just wait until none of any substance want to run.

Franken seeks access to rejected absentee data
By BRIAN BAKST… Democrat Al Franken, locked in a tight Senate race headed to a statewide recount, sued Thursday for access to data on voters who had their absentee ballots rejected.

Franken's lawsuit was filed in Ramsey County District Court, but his campaign is hoping that a ruling in their favor would be applied statewide.

… "We are not suing to have these in the count," said Franken's lead attorney, Marc Elias. "We are simply looking for the data so that we can identify people who were legal and lawful voters to ensure their ballots are counted."

That data might be useful only in a future lawsuit, since it's not clear that ballots found to be improperly rejected could even be used in the recount administered by state election officials.

Elias, a Washington-based attorney who was general counsel to John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign, argued that the state canvassing board could rule them eligible. Under questioning, he didn't point to a specific law that allowed for that step.

… Absentee ballots can be rejected for different reasons, such as a signature on a ballot that doesn't match the one on file with the county.

What do you think? Franken says this vote doesn't mean the voter wanted to vote for Coleman?

I think in cases like this we need to figure out the voters' intent. Obviously the voter made an "X" by Norm Coleman's name, but then scribbled it out and tried to draw what most reasonable people would agree is a donkey, indicating that the vote was supposed to go to the Democrat. And who is the Democrat on the ballot? Exactly.

I rest my case.

It's ironic. Ten years ago Franken would write a skit about politicians lawyers changing the votes of people who scribble instead of making an X for their choices, on Saturday Night Live. Now he is the skit.

I'd let this hold as a Coleman vote but the view that this voter decided to pass on the senator vote is not absurd...it almost looks like he put an "x" through his initial choice.

Margin down to 174 with 18% counted.

Not a direct quote but there was a video running during the campaign where Franken talks about if he happens to be nominated to run against Coleman and more than 50 people voted for Franken it would be a joke.

Al Franken in the senate reminds me of that line from ‘Back to the Future when Marty told the professor from the past the President was Ronald Reagan. He replied; “Who’s the Vice President / Jerry Lewis?"

Looking for a silver lining; if Franken does win it may improve satellite reception.

No. It's a Minnesota progressive thing:
Democratic Farmer Labor Party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_Democratic-Farmer-Labor_Party) (DFL) is a major political party in the US state of Minnesota. It was created on April 15, 1944 when the Minnesota Democratic Party and the Farmer-Labor Party merged. Hubert Humphrey was instrumental in this merger. The party is affiliated with the national Democratic Party. The nickname "DFLer" is often used in Minnesota, by both members of the party and non-members, as an alternative to "Democrats".

I used to work at NBC and recollect seeing Al Franken during SNL days.

Now this was in the days when everyone still wore suits to work, so all the more jarring was this scene - I was on the elevator and the door opened on the floor where the SNL staff/writers worked...walking past the elevator without a care in the world was Franken, bare-chested with only a towel draped around his waist. Wonder if he's show up at the Capitol similarily attired.
