House Republicans Blame Pelosi’s Speech
Patrick Yoest reports from Washington on Congress.

House Republicans blamed the failure of the $700 billion Wall Street rescue plan Monday on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.), saying that Pelosi had been too partisan in a floor speech prior to the vote. (See the speech here, via CSPAN.)

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R., Ohio) said that Pelosi’s speech “poisoned” the Republican caucus and “caused a number of members we thought we could get to go south.”

If those reps allowed her rhetoric to change their votes, they are prima donnas and should not be reps.

I think it needs more tweaking anyway, can't say that I like the idea of bailing out Wall Street.

My daddy always said using a lot of credit was a bad thing.....

Ralph, Ralph, Ralph... I was waiting for you to post this line of nonsense.

This is just like the bracelet thing, buddy. All those Repubs that are using this rationale , better head off to Sweden for a gender change, because if they reached down for a pair, they couldn't find any... NO DOUBT !

Come on ... you can do better than that. There are valid arguments to not go forward, but playing the "pussy" card isn't one of them... unless they are !

if she really was behind killing this bill, i got to change my rating on her from imbicile to pure genius.

all this bill is doing is sending the bad mortgages to the government, meaning us, the government pays the thieves back 100% of the loan, then resells it back to the thieves at a 70% discount and gives them more heroine to go back out and rob us for mone.

how can pelosi be this brilliant to see thru this whole deal?

I am glad she screwed up the whole thing. Those banks need to declare bankruptcy and need to go away. If you are smart enough to do the real research into this problem, it will take you back to the 70's, to the Clinton administration and to the corporations that allow their companies to allow one person (the CEO) to benefit from performance, be it real, be it cooked books. To blame it on Bush is total BS. ALL POLITCIANS CURRENTLY HOLDING OFFICE NEED TO REPLACED!! INCLUDING THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES!! Start over. No PACs. No influence from anything/anyone!

What the hell happened to the GOP slogan - Country First? My God, if all it took was some comments by Pelosi to switch their vote ... JR, are you serious with this kind of BS, or is this from The Onion?. Pelosi's words made them change their vote?

Don't know who the guest was on Glenn Beck today, but the small part I heard was that they (The Senate or Congress) thought that nothing could top all the calls they received concerning the Immigration Bill, but this one did it. They got more calls from the public, mad about this bailout, I don't think they had a choce. Political suicide. Do you all know that 40% of the Dems also voted against this bill. Think about that. 40%. And afterwards, Pelosi and crew tried to blame it on the Republicans. CLEAN HOUSE!! FIRE YOUR REPRESENTATIVES!!!

I am saying she showed her ass. She could have just called for the vote and let the chips fall. She didn't have to act this way.

I agree that it shouldn't have changed any minds..........but I think many were on the fence. Pelosi pushed them off............

I am not complaining. I was against this thing, but now on the fence myself. This is truly a very tough call. If I was up there voting, I don't think I could vote for it, without some major changes. Then again, I would also be leading the call for U.S. Attorneys to be locking people up. You don't see anybody doing that, do you?

This thread is about Pelosi using this critical time as a political hammer.

Just like Kerry and the others who were all over TV today. They should have kept their mouths shut and moved forward. Nope, couldn't be done............

What are you talking about? Do you honestly think that people were swayed one way or the other based on what Nancy Pelosi said on the floor of the House? If so, I've some bad mortgages to sell you for 700 billion.

Pelosi and Frank have both said this must be a bipartisan effort, not a one party effort. I rarely agree with Pelosi, but she is right on this. Right now, the bill is being supported heavily by NY, NJ, and Conn and MA. Rural areas hard hit and black urban areas are not gung ho to jump into a 700 billion dollar bailout for the rich. You actually think guys like Kuccinich can be reined in by a Pelosi speech. Whew..

Frankly, I'm glad they're talking. I don't want this bailout to pass, but it is an extremely weak politician who blames his vote on a speech that an opponent made to compromise his/her principals and beleifs and vote.

I rarely agree with Pelosi, but she is right on this. .
The gall of her to pin this debacle on the foot on Reps let alone Bush just before the vote, with the vast amount of blood on the hands of many Dems is laughable. Her idiocy for putting this up for a vote, knowing it was close, and making that dopey speech is about as stupid of a thing as I've seen.

The 12 that changed were reluctant yea's.

You're on the mark. Some senator on Beck's show claimed that ratio of phone calls against the bailout was a whopping 9-1! If that's true, that's unbelievable. But it certainly would account for why 40% of the DEMS retreated with their tails between their legs. They were scared to death of this kind of public outcry and outrage.

She was only pointing out the obvious. Very well spoken, and simply put (even Palin could grasp what she said). I'm thrilled this bill tanked. No one is offering to bail me out of my losses from bad Pick 6 and Pick 4 tickets this year. This has been my worst year gambling since 1997. Screw Wall Street.

What she showed was how ignorant or dishonest (take your pick) she really is. Standing along side Barney Frank one was a key supporter of Fannie / Freddie back in 03 when the Bush administration was attempting to rein them in - is the height of hypocracy.

There's a reason the Dems are not calling for Congressional investigations.

 Who called her "Pig-low-see"? How distasteful on this holiday.
Some say she appears to drool like a rabid dog when she attacks, and acts like a vicious small dog nip, nip, nipping at ones heels. Others, I hear, have referred to her as more of a "Viper".

Regardless of what she is called, she effectively stopped this last effort of congress with her rhetoric.

we have to thank people like ron paul and nancy pelosi, the 94 democrats, and all the republicans that stood up to this socialist president for killing this bill. they all deserve a letter of thanks from all of us. they prevented the largest transformation of wealth the world has ever seen.

what was this bill all about anyway? it was about financial institutions and hedge funds that made bad bets and wanted to get bailed out. does anyone bail you out when you have a bad day at the race track? why should these guys get bailed out? is it because they wear $3000 suits and drive mercedes benzes, and have big homes on long island. give me a break. thank you to all the resposible leaders that stopped this stupid welfare bill.

the one good thing we have left is freedom of speech. so we don't have to be in hell like the big guys are trying to stuff us with. we won't be in a depression, lets take care of our own communities, and let wall street take care of themselves.

Praise the Lord. Now if we can just get them to stop this nonsense. Giving that kind of money to the people that lost that much is pure lunacy to me. It is almost as crazed as the idea the Gov could do a good job of it.

This just reeks of politicians once more taking care of their friends with taxpayer money.

Any representative that actually changed their vote based on what Nancy Pelosi said should be thrown out of office. Give me a break. This was important legislation that affected every taxpayer. Whatever side of the bill you were on, I would like to think that your decision was based on a thoughtful consideration of the facts, and you actually did what was best for nation.

Anybody that can't take a little political banter should pick up their toys and go home.

While I would admit Pelosi politicized the the issue way too much, anyone that actually changed their vote over it is a joke!!!

nobody changed their votes because of what she said. none of them tell the truth publically. she had a deal with bush, she got her closest friends to vote against the bill, and got the curagious republicans to do the same. its that simple, she did a good job in my opinion. who the hell wants welfare for the rich that stole our money to begin with? in fairness to fair, she came thru in the clutch.

Anyone in this thread have a clue as to how bills are written?

Bush did NOT write this BILL.....congress - a dem controlled, Pelosi controlled congress wrote it. The idea Pig-low-see ( I like that!) was to ram it through but not take responsibility for it. They DID NOT NEED the republicans to pass it last week. With Bush on their side, there WAS NO VETO threat - they have the majority and could have passed it on day one, but the economy, and the American people were NEVER a concern of Miss Piggy.

This is why crapo like this happens - people to ignorant ot get past Bush = bad tooally ignore facts and allow the dems to pull this crap. Did anyone here see the eviden PA and Ralph posted? BUSH and THE REPUBS are the ones who repeatedly tried to stop this crisis...DEMS are the ones who denied it existed.

This bill is nothing but a "bail out" of the Dems friends who ran their businesses into the ground. Why isn't Chase struggling or knocking at the gov's door? They ran their business like it was a bank! Ohhhhh wait! It is a bank!! Give the money to the solvent banks so they can buy and shoreup these dumbasses.

Somebody tell me.....when you see the pols on TV talking about the need for this bailout, which party affiliation is lined up before the cameras?

If this nation is dumb enough to vote a Dem in as Prez right now, we deserve to go down the tubes.

Lessee....my son gets college .....FREE!!! My family gets health care....FREE! I get tax cuts.....FREE MONEY!!! Who the hell is paying for this??

Welfare is looking better and better everyday!

hey donnie, don't you think the whole system is to blame. all you have are 2 parties doing the same thing from different directions. we talk about healthcare, the only difference between the democrats and republicans are the dems want it for free and the repubs want you to pay for it. why not get down to the real problem, people that don't take care of themselves, the ones that load their systems up with sugar, smoke cigarettes, drink lots of alcohol, and take all the rotten drugs that the doctors push on you are the drain on the system. how come neither side wants to adress the real problem. i will tell you why, because food company's and pharmaceutical company's and the american medical association donate to both sides. the whole system is infested, and needs to be changed. every single issue is like this one.

Tom

Donnie, right on. Why not reward the institutions that were NOT crooked by helping THEM fix things? The democrats only reward failure. Let's hand over 1 trillion buck to proven losers..that is a plan??????

I really am disappointed that Bush was so stupid to be taken in by this. I gave him far too much credit for brains.

I think where we fail is where we allow people to become career politicians and they never have to "come home" to be held accountable. They get too many perks while in office, they work in reality parttime, and their retirement package is second to none. And then there are all the sweetheart deals under the table.
My approach....CLEAN SWEEP!!

The more I think about it, the more I think I may investigate running for some office. Why the hell am I working so hard???

nobody in Congress can write a bill, when they say their staffs work on them , what they mean are the lobby boys dictate to their staffs what the bill will be. The only party at that table is the money party.
