Anyone have info on maiden winner Go Smarty Go (Sunday fifth Belmont). Did he come out of race ok? Or any other info on the horse. From my point of view it was a sharp debut.

I was wondering the same thing. He sure looked promising. All Equibase indicates is that he was vanned off. Hopefully the vanning off was only a precaution and it was nothing serious.

It was sad to see the winners circle ceremony with everyone there but the horse getting their picture taken. If I were an owner I'd prefer to just skip the winners circle gathering under such conditions. Strikes me as unseemly.

I thought he looked good, settled and drew clear. Smarty is off to a banging start.

I hope the horse is okay. It's really messed up when something like this happens to a firster, especially after a win.

What happened?? Who trains this colt? I can't find anything about this.

Frank Alexander trains him. Out of a Holy Bull mare. He was working since June 17 at Belmont, than at Saratoga and back to Belmont. His last work was a sharp drill. it was Smartys 3rd winner I know of. Don't know what happened to him after though.

Thanks, StevieB... maybe some word will filter down about this youngster...
I think Smarty Jones is is going to be a great sire.

I was at Belmont on Sunday and saw the race. Go Smarty Go looked really impressive in his first career race. Then something must have went wrong after the wire cause I look over on the big screen and they're showing the jockey off the horse and hes checking him out as if somethings wrong. The jockey left and the ambulance came over and they took the horse away. At no point though did it look like the horse was in distress at all so I'm clueless on what could have happened.

Who was on him?
Better safe than sorry, so cudos to his rider... it's good that you didn't think the colt looked in distress.
Hope he's OK

I was sorry to see Smarty Party sort of fade, started out so great.

I couldn't stand it so looked up the chart, link below. All it said is he was vanned off after the finish.

jognlope...Me too...maybe this Smarty baby will bring it back...IF he's OK. I sure hated to see the big 'L' next to his name...I don't like Lasix for these babies unless he's bled in works, they probably be better off without it....
but, oh well :bang:

Castellano was on him. I really wish there would be a report on what happened cause it really puzzles me. On the big screen they just showed him standing there while Castellano took the saddle off without any trouble. Unless I missed something as I didn't watch the whole time. Would have been nice if there was some announcement on the PA system but there wasn't.

Go Smarty Go (Smarty Jones - Sarah's World by Holy Bull), who was pulled up after winning a maiden race on the turf on September 21 (http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/maidenwatch/archive/2008/09/21/go-smarty-go-delivers.aspx), suffered a condylar fracture in his left front. He had surgery and the prognosis is good, but he is unlikely to race again.

titans....tucker6 posted what happened and included links, but I wanted to say that I agree with you on an announcment over the PA system...every track should announce something about any horse being vanned off the track...regardless of why, the folks should be updated on what occured, rather than leaving the track wondering  if said horse would be OK or not...shame on Belmont for not announcing anything.

Condylar farcture...what a damned :( shame for this Smarty colt and his connections.

Appreciate the info as disapointing as it is.

Joanied,

I, too, believe Smarty Jones may be a very good sire, but how do you believe Go Smarty Go's breakdown will affect Smarty Jones' stud value. I don't like the fact that Smarty was somewhat of a fragile horse (did not complete 3 year old campaign due to bruises on all four legs). On the other side, four of his offspring have shown promise already, and this may have been his best so far. I know it's a crass question given the injury suffered by GSG, but life must go on.

The track makes no such announcement because they do not know whether the horse will be ok or not until a full eval is done. How do you expect them to make an announcement with any accuracy? Don't count out GSG from coming back. My horse had a condylar fx, had surg 2 days later, took off 10 mos and won her first race back.

Tucker,
I doubt one Smarty baby breaking down would reduce his stud value...especially if you consider the fact that stallions like Mr. P and Storm Cat, known for throwing unsoundness, never had their stud value decrease because of it...folks buy and hope for the best.
Yes, Smarty did have some leg issues, but I am not sure just exactly how serious they were...at any rate, only time will tell...Go Smarty Go may be one of only a few of Smarty's get that have problems...sometimes folks forget, the mare's side counts too. If I were sending a mare to a stud that has questionable soundness, I'd send a mare that herself was sound as a dollar (oooppss...not a good example:D ), and who's bloodlines included horses that ran sound.

True... some do come back with no further issues...let's hope that may be the case with GSG...he's young, so his bones should heal extremely well.
