View Full Version : Women's vote-- 20 point move in 3 weeks

(edit- 20 point swing in white women vote)

Ya think Obama wants a do over on Biden?

Suddenly the key isn't McCain vs Obama-- Their grass root supporters are entrenched. The swing votes have moved. The pressure is squarely on Joe now to pull his weight since Sarah has changed the look of this thing totally.

McCain's choice of Sarah Palin is going to change the way national campaigns & strategies are formulated and planned from now on, I believe.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/09/mccain-poll-wom.html

snippage

The most surprising results -- and surely the most disturbing for the freshman Illinois senator's camp -- are the immense gains McCain has made among white women following the Republican National Convention and the well-received prime-time speech by Palin.

In barely three weeks since before the Democratic convention last month, that crucial group of female voters has moved from 50-42 in Obama's favor to 53-41 for McCain now.

That's a huge 20-point shift in almost as many days, no doubt attributed in large part to the addition of a woman to the Republican ticket, Alaskan Gov. Palin, for the first time in the party's 164-year history.

The same poll also revealed a large shift toward McCain in Midwest battleground states from a 19-point deficit to a 7-point edge. The same numbers also indicated Obama making little or no progress in the areas of having sufficient experience and wooing to his side former supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Obama still leads slightly among those who think he represents their values (48-44) and those who think he will bring change (51-39).

But McCain-Palin have pulled ahead among independents (50-43), among married women (48-44) and especially among white Catholics (59-36).

Are you saying we can blame white women if Republicans drag the country down even further over the next 4 years, ElKabong?

If the key to this election is Palin, we have to be the dumbest country (excluding both coasts and the Great Lakes area) in modern history.

I wonder if it has anything to do with water or the lack of.

Ya think Obama wants a do over on Biden?

I'll believe this when I see it. (And for the record, I don't believe it.)

Just bet $50 more on Obama today. Was in a discussion with a couple of guys (neopubs obviously) and they were talking about how close the race is and that McCain should win.

I said what I thought, and one guy replied, "Well, we'll probably have to bet a little sumpthin on that."

"I'll bet on Obama," I said, "but I'm not laying any odds."

They both chimed up, "You won't have to lay any odds, this race is basically a toss up."

"OK, then I'll go up to $300."

"Well...(hem and haw) not right now."

"OK, how about $50 then? It'll just be a 'sweat' bet. Somethin to do...you know."

He reluctantly agreed.

Some people are real sure about things until it comes time to put their money down. :D

Dear 'Stinks',

Since you phrased your reply as such, my retort will be "only if the democrat house continues to be unwilling to reach across the aisle and do NOTHING except point the finger of blame whist sitting back and forming moss on their collective asses."

Mccain's already showed obamma a thing or two. Very cagey pick. I'm in my mid 50s and I've never seen an immediate positive impact on a race as Palin's choice. If she holds her own in the debate she's gold. Personally I think she'll slam Biden's ass. We'll see.

Elkabong, you can actually look it up. Unless the Dems have 60 Senators to override Bush vetos, the smart thing to do is what the Dems are doing. Wait for the upcoming election. Why deal with Bush now?

I seriously doubt McCain at 72 can show Obama much of anything. Since you are around my age, when was the last time one of your parents showed you a thing or two? (That's not being mean. That's being real. If anything, you are becoming your parents' caretaker more and more with each passing day.)

I'm from NJ. What section or state are you from?

P.S. I look forward to the Biden/Palin debate. Probably much more than you do.

So the dems are currently the party of Do Nothing & Proud Of It.....nice. Be sure to end every obama commercial with that one.

Mccain definitely schooled obamma on the veep choice. Biden? Are you kidding me? Again, in my lifetime I haven't seen a positive swing for either party (based on a decision) this far into a race like the one we're witnessing now. 20 points in 21 days all b/c of a vp choice. Amazing.

I'm from Texas, as my avatar would suggest.

You do bring up a good point on the age thing, but Mccain has certainly played this hand very well. You may not admit it, but he has. I for one didn't think he had it in him, but he had 5 months basically to come up w/ the pick. His choice and timing were perfect.

You know, I have been one to go after some of these really older Senators etc, you know, the ones in their 80's etc. But that is on issues that they vote on, on their own etc. The Statement above may be the most ridiculous thing I have read in a while. Presidential Campaigns are run by committee and teams of so called experts. McCain is surrounded by advisors etc. You actually think that the McCain camp can't outsmart the Obama camp on certain parts of the campaign because of McCain's age? Get real.

The fact that you as a person in your fifties believe that you can't learn anything from a 72 year old person, makes me wonder who the hell the 72 year old types you are hanging around with are? You can learn from anybody, especially your elders. I can't believe you said this? Amazing??

boy you aren't kidding. the impending meltdown and unravleing of the great ones campaign, all due to a simple strong-willed hockey mom from Alaska, will unleash and unhinge the wackos in ways I can only imagine.

I went to see John & Sarah this morning at the event here....the crowd was mostly women, and they were revved up. Four years ago Bush was here....mostly men.

One of the button-sellers had some that said "Hot Chicks Vote Republican." They're tapping into a demographic with a huge upside that extremist advisers on both sides have left exposed. We'll see who's whistling past the graveyard now.

Bigmack, I'm enjoying the theater too!

JustRalph, as you so aptly put it, we have two choices in this election. One man is going to need to be led by a committee so he doesn't screw up and the other guy is in his prime and has managed to run an ingenius campaign so far mainly on his own. (Unless you think the Clintons didn't really want to win.) As far as the age thing goes, no disrespect meant. Let me put it another way. If your 40, 30, 20, 10, or less, I imagine there is a tremendous amount you can learn from somebody in their 70's. Unfortunately, by the time you are in your mid-fifties you've already learned it. Now you move on to understanding that the person you learned so much from really needs your help. Nothing wrong with that at all. It's nature's way.

Boxcar, I wish my Dad was around to give me advice. He died 6 years ago at age 78. He fought in World War II but he was not a POW.

rastajenk, the hot chicks sign is pathetic by any standard.

And I don't want forget my buddy from Texas! ElKabong, I sincerely wish the Lone Star State was it's own country too. Because I don't know how many more Gramm's, DeLay's, or Bushes the US can survive. No personal offense intended, of course.

NJ,

Next time you're in town (lone star park), lemme know. First beer is on me.

FWIW, Texas is a very large, diverse state. Dallas nothing like Houston, which has little in common with Austin etc etc....Most our politicians are like everyone else's and beleive it or not GWB reached across party lines here for the good of the state. In DC that didn't play, no one (either side) wants to cooperate for the good of the nation.

Stay well

How could ya forget Sharpe (no really) James - going from the mayor's house in Newark to the big house?

I spent the first 24 years of my life in NJ. I look at the majority of my friends who stayed and feel bad for them - the cost of living is ridiculous and its impossible for them to get ahead. My sister in laws can't dream of buying a decent house, and their income is over 100K per year. NJ is not a place to raise a family, not if you want them to do better than you did. Its a broken state. If you're old it ain't bad, but if you're young its a path to nowhere. My advice to all my friends is get out while you can.

****WARNING STRONG LANGUAGE AT THE LINK***********I love every minute of this...now, if we can only keep Obama from kicking Biden out and replacing him with Clinton (I doubt she would EVER agree to such a move), this should be money in the bank....again.....
