have/had AVG...just got hammered yesterday...ie...it detected the incoming virus...but did not stop it...killed power immediately...ie..literally pulled the plug...

TOO damn late...all I get now is a nice bright blue screen...no matter what...gonna have to wipe that MF'er and start over w/that 'puter..

all that said...am using my more valuable one now...but obviously gonna have to try a new anti-virus program...

Thoughts???

By the way...all old threads are wiped here...is vista SIGNIFICANTLY safer than XP?

Before you reformat, grab your data files off of your hard drive with a Linux LiveCD.

I have had this problem lots of times. When you next start up your computer follow these steps:

1. Click 'run' on the start menu
2. Type in 'cmd' - this will take you to a command prompt screen.
3. Type in 'chkdsk /r'
4. It will say that this programme can run when you next restart your computer, so type 'y' (yes)
5. Now restart your computer and the disk scan will commence - it may take a while though, so do it at the end of the day.

Your computer should be fine afterwards.

F10 key does nothing either...it's totally frozen and blank...

Got the damn thing from just opening a topic at another forum...WHAM...just like that!

Type "avg virus blue screen" in a google search. You should find an article that states that avg 8.0 is so unstable that it is causing older pc's to crash. I think it may also state that a virus may not be the cause of the blue screen of death but the avg program itself. You may be able to start you pc in safe mode.

You can read it and decide for yourself if it applies to your situation.

Good luck

I'm doing a virus scan right now on my laptop..So far its A ok..So, if a new virus came out in the last 6 months that McAfee doesn't have the definition for do you still think that you're safe? Anti-virus programs can't detect malware that they don't know about. I'm not saying that you have a virus, but if I were you I wouldn't be so confident.

And more-or-less as a reply to the thread title, I use Nod32 from Eset as my anti-virus (not the Internet suite). It's as good as anything else and it doesn't take up a lot of resources which makes it better than Norton or McAfee or some of the other big names for me.

In addition, people here might want to take a look at Threatfire in addition to your antivirus program -- www.threatfire.com.

Recently my grandson was grounded and came to me to let him use my machine so that he could look up something, and lo and behold my Free Anti-virus software "Avast", found a virus......I took the steps to quarantine it and send the findings off to Avast.....The trouble with that, although I didn't experience any further problems with the virus, but some legacy items were left behind, I used all of the spyware type programs that I normally run (all free), and was still left with these desktop artifacts......

So, I used my last line of defense "Advanced Windows Care" (free-version), and Voila', the artifacts were gone.....In essence this is a personal recommendation for this product........With one click it will scan, report and repair 7-different categories of concern....Spyware Removal, Security Defense, Registry Fix, System Optimization, Start -up managing, Privacy Sweep and Junk Files Cleaned.......It does a heck of a good job, at catching a lot of Baloney stuff..It doesn't do it all, but it often does more than a lot of other programs of the same ilk.....It even has a restore center, where you can create and use the Windows restore function in an ez and convenient way....Highly recommended and it gets rid of more junk files that even that of Crap Cleaner or EZ-Cleaner (both good and effective freebies)......

you can get it for free, here:..... http://iobit.com (http://iobit.com/)

P.S. I use the free version of AVAST and I have been trouble free for the last 3-years, maybe not the best, but it works for me......

Download the add-on 'No-Script' for Firefox and use it. Not an av program but it allows you to schedule limited access to your computer from outside sources. It comes installed with an automatic feature that detects sites of a suspicious nature (spyware, malware, adware). The only drawback is that it might block the very site you are trying to browse. If so, its easy enough to temporarily allow the script through until you're done browsing.
