Disagree. That seems like a harsh sentence considering the white-collar nature of the "crime".

Yes it was illegal, and he has been punished, obviously effectively because he was upset at the severity of the sentence. I do think it is a bit harsh. He knew he was doing the wrong thing though, but I don't think he'd have been treated more harshly if he was a poor man.

Then again, he'd be highly unlikely to be in that position if that were the case, so it's not really something you can make a comparison with anyway.
