Al Stanley the well known handicapper and writer and author of the book "Stanley's Law" narrated this story in one of his seminars which I attended.
Al Stanley used to frequent this bar. When he was there he used to discuss his picks of the day for Windsor Raceway with the bartender John who was an avid fan of harness racing.
One day he gave his picks to John and off he went to the track. Next day he stops by the bar and asked John how he fared the other day fully expecting a negative reply only to find John in a very jovial mood with all smiles.
John said that he had a good day as he had three winners all in the double digit. But John Al said... all my picks were 2nds and 3rds that day.
John explained and said that he always played Als second pick win and place.
Go figure.
