Anyone who's bet on horses has experienced bad beats. The people who bet on Bilmar Steele to show in Wednesday, July 23rd's 6th race at Pompano experienced one of the worst "beats" I've ever witnessed.

Bilmar Steele was 2/5 to win the race, and of the $6223 in the show pool, $5838 (93.8%) was wagered on him. As the field hit the top of the stretch the final time, Bilmar Steele was cruising along in front, a couple of lengths in front of the second horse, and seven lengths ahead of the third and fourth horses. About half way down the stretch Bilmar Steele made a sudden, hard left turn and went into the infield. The announcer said he had "broken equipment". A very scary incident, but thankfully the driver was ok, and the horse didn't appear to be injured - he was running loose while the other drivers were pulling up their horses after the race.

The show prices on the horses that finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in this race: 34.20, 66.00, 31.40. In the world of parimutuel wagering, one person's bad luck is often another's windfall.
