In Tuesday's (July 29) 6th race at Hazel Park the 2 horse (The Field Marshal) was favored at 30 cents on the dollar (1/5 on the toteboard). Of the $13,062 in the show pool, The Field Marshal had $12,576 (96.3% of the pool) wagered on him. The Field Marshal finished 4th, losing the show photo by a head. The show payoffs on the three horses that hit the board were 66.80, 240.60, 80.60. Yes, those are the correct prices.

In the very next race, the 9 horse (Insubordinate) was a 2/5 (40 cents on the dollar) favorite. Of the $893 in the show pool, Insubordinate had only $87 (9.7%) wagered on him to show, though he had 58.7% of the win pool. He won the race, and his payoffs across the board were 2.80, 2.80, 5.40. In this race the favorite was a huge overlay in the show pool, while in the previous race every horse except the favorite was a huge show overlay.

Looks to me like the bridge jumpers that got burned on the first horse had no show money left to wager with on the next 2/5 shot!:D

And when you look at it, the lowest possible show payout with a horse with 96.3% of the pool missing the board is $15.80 on a $2 ticket assuming net-pool pricing, dime breakage, and a 17% takeout.
