Delaware, OH --- Despite trainer and co-owner Brent MacGrath’s statement that Somebeachsomewhere will not start in the Little Brown Jug because of the possibility of having to race heats, the bettors have shown that they still want him to race in Delaware.

Badlands Nitro, runner-up to Somebeachsomewhere in the $1.47 million North America Cup final and winner of the Art Rooney Pace final, is next at odds of 7-1. Beeeyouuuuuuu, owned by Dale Walters of Delaware, Ohio and trained by his son, Bill, and Share The Delight, who finished third in the Meadowlands Pace final, are 8-1. Santanna Blue Chip is fifth at odds of 10-1.

The field, which includes all other 3-year-old pacers, closed at 10-1. The field bet also includes any fillies that may enter the Jug.

The first future pool closed Sunday after four days of betting action at racetracks and internet sites across the United States. The second future wagering pool is from 12:00 p.m. August 21 through 11:30 p.m. August 24. This is the weekend after the Battle of Brandywine at Harrah’s Chester and the week before the Cane Pace at Freehold Raceway.

I made it to the last 2 Jugs, and really hate that I will miss it this year (school schedule just too tight to make the trip out).

If anyone has a chance to attend the Little Brown Jug, definitely take the opportunity and go. Whether or not you have a burning passion for harness racing doesn't matter, because it is a wonderful day of racing and haning with cool poeple...

I have been attending the LBJ since 1982, besides the great party you get a chance to see the great 3 year olds each year,up close. I think the Life Sign race was one of the best I ever saw.

SBSW's race last night from Mohawk is on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G4AbLiZN_k). Looked like Keystone Horatio was giving him a run for his money, and then as usual SBSW found his other gear with about 1/8 to go and ran away with it.

Still just sucks that he is not pointed at the Jug...

from Jul 1958 Hoof Beats:
Purses have been raised $100 per event at Chillicothe, O., where the Ross County Fair will be offering a minimum of $500 in each purse. This fair opens Aug. 12 for three days of racing
--------------
from May 1957 Hoof Beats
The Ross County Agricultural Society at CHILLICOTHE, O., is returning harness racing to its schedule this year after one season without the trotters and pacers. Fair President Bennet W. Junk reports that racing is slated for Aug. 21-23 with daytime only

from Feb 22, 1939 Harness Horse
The first horse that ever beat 2:00 in harness was the pacer Flying Jib, whose mile with running mate in 1:583/4 was paced at Chillicothe, Ohio, in 1894. "The Jibs'' limit in single harness was 2:04, and it will be seen that he shaded that over five seconds when relieved from pulling the load of driver and wagon. In that performance he was also hitched to an old-fashioned "skeleton wagon" which, while fitted with pneumatic tires, was much heavier and harder to pull than the modern speed wagon to which Uhlan and "Slats" were hitched. Figuring all these things it is therefore, I think, conservative to make the estimate above: that with everything right, Uhlan could have trotted a mile right at 1:50 with running mate.

From May 14, 1947 Harness Horse
Charley Valentine has passed on after an eventful life, the latter part of which was spent in comfortable sur-roundings, a nice home, an affectionate and considerable wife to whom he owed so much, and in such financial condi-tions as to provide him everything he desired. We knew him perhaps as inti-mately as any one now active in the harness horse sport, as while consider-ably older, we were both born and grew to manhood in the same town, and we well recall, after he ceased to ride runners he drove the old omnibus which met all trains at the two depots, for one of the local hotels, and which also carried the mail. That was back in the early '90's and the writer's task after school hours was clerking in a newsstand in the Post Office, and when Charley would throw the bags from the top of the old bus, we dragged the leather or first class pouches in for distribution, then delivered all Specials, the latter providing us extra money, eight cents each. We well recall one of his big days, one which provided him about his fastest ride up to that time as we were in the neighboring city of Chillicothe, O., when he won the free-for-all pace with Eudora in 2:051/4, and the fact that this daughter of Wilton 2:191/4, had been bred and was still the property of Clark Story one of the leading citizens, it proved a gala occasion indeed. That happening was back in 1906, and until we looked up the race for accuracy, we never thought forty years had elapsed.

from July 27, 1938 Harness Horse
As a youngster, the writer was one of the throng privileged to witness the first public mile of a harness horse in two-minutes, this being back in October, 1894, at the once famous kite track at Chillicothe, O., same being about 20 miles from my "home town." The meeting that year attracted most of the famous drivers and included Johnny Dickerson, Ben Walker and Scott Hudson, who are still with us, and other notables, Budd Doble, Andy McDowell, Myron McHenry, Crit Davis, John Hussey, George Starr, Joe Rea, John Splan, etc. Among the campaigners engaged were John R. Gentry, then world's champion pacer; Whirligig, first three-year-old pacer to reach 2:10; Ethel A., which just fell short a quarter of a second at Chillicothe, of equalling the mark set by the daughter of Wilko; Azote, winner of 11 races that season; Onoqua, the noted three-year-old trotter which ranked second to Expressive as regards races won that season; the champion, Directly; Rubenstein, then the pride of Mansfield, O., and countless others.

from June 16, 1926 Horse Review
Eli, a bay gelding of tremendous speed and uncertain manners, was owned by W. T. Browning, of Chillicothe and Pete Fuller, of Marcelline, the name at the time the horse was running bearing the same significance that it does today: "Get There, Eli," or, as given in more fastidious circles: "He got there." Eli was strictly thoroughbred and delighted in long distances; In short, the route was never too long for the bay gelding. But there was nothing certain when Eli started in a race and "Columbus" recalls several instances wherein he brought untold satisfaction to his owners and friends, or caused hours of sorrowful reflection on the way and means of horse racing.

Spintella Comet, the richly-bred two-year-old daughter of Scotland's Comet 2:00 owned by Dr. C. D. Leggett, Chillicothe, Ohio, is coming along nicely at the local fairgrounds. She is the first foal from Betty Tell, a full sister to the brilliant Spencer gelding, Spintell 1:583/4, holder of several World Records. Her owner is Race Secretary of the Ross County Fair, Chillicothe, Ohio, and is hopeful that the aristocratic miss will come up to the achievements of her close relatives, as in addition to their fast mile track marks Scotland's Comet and Spintell are credited, respectively, with miles in 2:021/2 and 2:021/4 on half-mile ovals.
